As she neared the spaceship, she saw Edward waiting for her. He didn't try to approach her, but her guards blocked his path anyway.
Her guards, she realized. She was already thinking of them as her own. She shook her head and boarded the spaceship. To her surprise, Edward didn't try to follow.
He just stared at her. Was he mad? Was he upset? Was he happy to finally see her go? Is that why he had come? She couldn't tell. She just kept her head down and blinked back her tears.
It was only after the spaceship had lifted when Edward decided to act. It wasn't until much later that she realized he had intentionally done so, because he knew that she had to leave.
"Aurora!" he screamed from below. "I love you!" The sound rocketed around in her skull. He loved her? After all that she had done? After finding out what she truly was?
"I love you!" he screamed again. Her breath started coming in short bursts and she felt her heart thud against her chest. But that wasn't enough to get her up.
No, it was the third time he shouted that she ran toward the half-closed spaceship entrance.
"Open the entrance! Stop the lift off!" she shouted. Her crew ran off to do as she had commanded.
"Your Majesty," one of the Elders said, grabbing her arm to hold her back, "it isn't wise-"
"I don't care!" Aurora screamed, wrenching out of his grasp. She ran to the now open entrance and looked down. She could see Edward, far below, but still within earshot. Edward saw her, and just seeing her seemed to make him so, so happy.
In that moment, Aurora Borealis, queen of Aria, ruler of the Arourans, made a choice. She cupped her hands around her mouth.
"Edward!" she screamed. "I love you too!" She held back tears, not wanting to hold a blurry memory of him.
"I love you!" she screamed. "I love you!" And then, Edward smiled the most beautiful smile she had ever seen.
To everyone on the ship, it had seemed like they were confessing their love to each other. And although that was true, only Aurora and Edward knew the true meaning behind the words.
Three was a promise, a swear to see through till the end. And love itself was a promise, to never be apart, or to return to each other, no matter what. Yes, in those last moments, Edward had promised her that he would wait for her, and she had promised him that she would come back. And he would keep that promise. After all, he had told her that he loved her, even after finding out that she was an alien.
She intended to keep her promise as well. Yes, she would return to Earth one day. And as she headed into the stars, to the home she'd always longed for, she did the one thing she did not ever think she would do on that journey. Aurora Borealis cried.
