CHAPTER ELEVEN - SO CLOSE, YET SO FAR

''Ottieni le risposte e poi uccidilo!'' Carter furiously shouted down the phone making Nicole jump. (Get the answers then kill him!) Carter hung up the phone and rubbed his forehead. He grabbed his stuff and walked out. Nicole following close behind. He climbed up the hill on his bike and started the engine.

''Carter!'' Nicole said walking towards him. He took one more glance at her and sped off. Nicole felt her stomach drop, she turned around to see Eva standing behind her.

''Business is business, sweetheart.'' She said and then resumed. ''Carter is a very closed off man, he will break your heart... But for now, you are here with us.'' She grabbed her hand and lead her back onto the beach, Nicole took one look back before communicating with the others. Nicole turned to Zara curious.

''Do you know where Rebecca is?'' Nicole was on guard; many bad thoughts enclosed her mind.

''Chill, she has gone to pick up James. She is with Tyler.'' Nicole took a deep breath and reassured herself.

In the distance she saw James running towards the beach, she smiled. Nicole heard him shouting her name from the distance. James wrapped his tiny arms around Nicole's neck, she picked him up and hugged him tight. What she would do to have a family like this. She put him down and he beamed.

''Surprise!'' James shouted. Nicole laughed and she felt something was off. It all seemed strange. James whispered...

''He told me to give this to you.'' James tried to hide his fear, he handed over a fresh envelope and Nicole's colour drained from her face.

''Who told you?'' She knew the answer her worried voice shaking more than ever.

''Your father of course, he said he will see you soon.'' James ran past Nicole and over to his father who was in the water. Leaving Nicole trembling, she got up and looked around quicker than ever, her heart beating out of her chest.

''Nicole?'' Kayla said scaring Nicole. She turned around with strength.

''Yeah?'' She responded.

''Are you going to join us?'' Kayla said sweetly.

''I'd rather go home; I have a very big headache.'' Kayla nodded.

''Everything okay?'' She asked.

''Yeah why do you ask?'' Nicole questioned.

''You just seem off.'' Nicole smiled as she said it. Kayla turned around and told everyone that they need to leave. They all sighed and got into the matte black pick up cars. Nicole sat at the back staring off into the distance, she held herself. As soon as the car stopped, she ran inside, slamming the door behind her. Nicole positioned herself on the bed and got hold of the envelope her father had once touched. A tear fell from her cheek.

To my dearest daughter,

You have proven yourself however I will always find you and when I do my sweet child everyone you have ever loved will die; I will make you suffer more pain than any human being can handle. You will produce an heir a child to take over my mafia. After that we will end you. James seems like a good kid maybe we will start with him first. We are closer than you think, we are watching your every move. Your love wont last for Mr. Santino he's a player. He will break you down and make you fall ready for us to make our Mafia whole again. Nicole's hands were shaking, he couldn't move her body frozen, scared for not only her life but her loved ones. A knock came at the door making her flinch but not move instead she sat facing the window. Rebecca looked at her confused. She took the envelope from her hand and read it, a tear released from her and she gasped. She looked back at Nicole and sat next to her, Nicole rested her head on her shoulder and cried she couldn't hold it in anymore, pain and guilt washed over her like a flood.

''We need to tell them.'' Nicole looked up and nodded, they made their way down to the living room where everyone was watching tv even Carter arrived home. Nicole couldn't look any of them in the eye instead she looked down mesmerising the floor.

''What?'' Carter said sharply. Nicole's eyes were red form all the crying she had done. He walked over to Rebecca and snatched the letter out of her hand, he read it fury took over his body...

''Carter bro what's up?'' Tyler said.

''Everyone get out! Now! Nicole you stay.'' Everyone got out and looked at Nicole, Rebecca let go of her hand and started to explain everything in the dining room leaving Nicole standing shivering.

''Explain.'' Carter said directly. He rubbed his head and then his cheeks.

''He's here Carter, I told you.'' Nicole's started to shed tears.

''I won't let him hurt you.'' Nicole shook her head in disbelief.

''No! He will, he knows Carter. You don't know what he is capable off.'' Her voice said quaking in fear. Carter stepped over to her and looked her in the eyes.

''Not when you're under my protection. If I'm going to protect you Nicole, I need you to tell me everything. Your upbringing, his warehouse and more information anything you have to take him down.'' Carter sat down and grabbed her hand, placing her on his lap legs across his and snuggling into his neck. This was her home, her safe place but how long would it last.

''What do you want to know?'' She said quietly.

''Start about your family.'' He demanded.

''My father was abusive ever since I was young, when my mother gave birth to me, he kidnapped me. My mother never came looking for me. And gold digger as a stepmother. A half brother who used to...'' Nicole couldn't get her words out, her throat hurt, and her heart sank. She couldn't say it. Carter's expression was anger, his fists clamped shut. He wanted to kill his face said it all. Nicole carried on with the story she had lived, the drugs, the alcohol, the sex everything. After about 2 hours of talking tears streamed down her face. Carter put his hand on her face and wiped away the tears.

''I promise that no one will ever touch you, will never harm you ever.'' Carter pressed his lips against hers making her feel safe again. They broke the kiss and they lay on the sofa till she slowly fell asleep to the rain pouring outside. Carter picked her up and carried her over to his bedroom placing her gentle soul on the right side of the bed covering her in his duvet. Rene had a separate room. He got changed and climbed into bed pushing her close to his chest and wrapping his arms around her.
