Chapter 1
Listen up!" The teacher, Mr. Neo, shrieked over the noise. "Hey! I said to listen up!" He failed to catch the students' attention and the noise just got worse. Hans Lima sighed, blowing a strand in the process. This teacher was hopeless, he thought to himself. If only his classmates would shut up and listen to the teacher. They were currently gathered in the laboratory for a science project. No, Hans thought, I was dragged here. Something about the white tiles of the room reminded him about hospitals. And he hated hospitals. Hans shuddered at the thought. To distract himself, he looked out the window. It was raining that day and it was getting colder by the second. The project involved heat. Heat. The word itself gave him comfort. A smile lit his face at the thought of him snuggling around a burning building his dumb-headed classmates would cause a few seconds after using the oven.
"Hans." The boy snapped out of his thoughts to face someone he knew would rather die than talk to him.
"Oh, Cloud." Cloud Cab was a boy Hans had a past with. A very bad past. Hans used to be praised for being able to solve little mysteries but when Cloud came, his life became a living hell. They competed with each other all the time, always trying to find the error in each other's testimony when solving a mystery. They not only clashed when it came to mysteries but grades and sports too. Cloud just seemed to be better than Hans in every way possible. Sports, grades, mysteries......Hans observed his classmates....girls. God must've had a factory defect, Hans thought, I need a refund. Long story short, they were enemies.
"Hans, man. Can I join your group? All groups must have five members and...." Cloud looked at the people sitting in the same table as Hans and frowned. There were already five people. Hans raised an eyebrow.
"No. I don't think we need extra, we're already five and-"
"No, no!" Cloud interrupted then quickly walked over to a frail-looking boy and whispered, "Scram, kid or you'll regret ever being born."
The boy turned pale and scurried off to find another group.
Cloud turned to smile at Hans."You seem to have counted wrongly. You need one more." The guy sitting beside the boy who ran away snickered and high-fived Cloud.
"Nice one." The boy said in his high-pitched voice.
Cloud laughed in response. "Czarino, when will you ever hit puberty? You're starting to get mistaken for a girl." Czarino frowned. It deepened even more when their group was getting shouted at by Mr. Neo because they were still causing a ruckus even when the class had finally quieted.
"Don't worry," Cloud whispered to him. "The geezer's face is practically a tomato! He might explode any second." This seemed to cheer Czarino up because suddenly, his face was also turning red, not from anger, but from holding in his laughter. Hans pounded his fist on the table. "What is your problem, Cloud?! First you threaten our classmates' life-
"Oh, you heard? Cool."
"Second, you make Czarino mad then happy. Now, you're making fun of the teacher?!" Hans whispered harshly.
"So? Don't get so angry. Geez, man. We weren't even making fun of you." Cloud huffed.
"What are you really doing in my group? Are you planning something again?!" Hans looked at Cloud intensely.
"No. Dude, I just want to make peace." This struck Hans by surprise." All this fighting and negative aura is making me tired. Literally. I sometimes feel like hitting the sack when it's still 8:00 am i-"
"Wait, are you serious?"
"Yes. What does it sound like?"
"It's just that it's impossible. Not in a million lifetimes, heck, not even in an infinity!" Hans smiled, so relieved to finally meet the end of their five-year war.
"Well, congratulations, you have now experienced an infinity because it already happened." Cloud held his hand out. He wanted to shake on it. Hans gladly accepted and shook Cloud's hand like his life depended on it.
"Damn, man. Thi-"
"Mr. Lima! Sit down. Now." Mr. Neo's eyes looked like they were about to pop out anytime so Hans had no choice but to comply." Now, as I was saying, today we will be baking cookies. I know that you guys want to eat the cookies and I won't stop you because I know you kids might start the World War III, so I will allow you to eat them." The class cheered. "But. There's a but, okay? I will only allow you to eat it tomorrow." The cheers died down, then was quickly replaced by complaints and boo's. "No complaining. We only have enough time to do the project and discuss right after. Remember guys, exams are in two weeks, so we really have to discuss about Heat."
"But you said we were already advanced in our lessons!" Czarino shouted, which added more fuel to the class's fire. Mr. Neo needed to, yet again, pound his hairy fist on his table.
"Yes, I did say that but I'm including it in the exams for the Newton section." Due to that sentence, the class raged even more.
"Oh come on!" Elijah Zarito, one of Hans's group mates complained, standing up from his chair.
"I'm including it and there will be no room for any complaints. Now listen to the instructions and keep your mouths shut!"
