As the bell finally rang to dismiss 4th period I ran to the courtyard, not wanting to be late for lunch with Ansel. I could see him standing there so I slowed my pace, not wanting to look like a freak. He saw me and smiled, christ he was hot .He moved his lunch over so I could sit down so I swung down my 20 pound backpack and flopped on to the bench. "Hey, for a second there I thought you had ditched me!" he said sarcastically. I was very early."Wouldn't dream of it." I retorted, rolling my eyes.I opened up my squished PB&J and made a face, "Jeez that looks bad." I mumbled to myself. "You can have half of mine if you want" he said , holding out half of what looked like one of the best BLTs I had ever seen. "Seriously?"I asked "Of course! What are friends for?" All I could really do was take the sandwich with shaky hands and stammer my thanks. "Okay , I've been wondering ever since I first met you, what did you do for your audition to get in to La Guardia?" he asked me."I - I sang." I looked down at the floor. "Sing me something." he stared at me expectantly "what did you say?" I prayed that he hadn't just asked me to sing. "I said sing me something ." Shit. He waited. I began hesitantly " It's a little bit funny, this feeling inside," My voice grew stronger. "I'm not one of those who can easily hide, I don't have much money, but boy, if I did, I'd buy a big house where, we both could live. And you can tell everybody, this is your song, it may be quite simple but now that it's done, I hope you don't mind , I hope you don't mind , that I put down in words, how wonderful life is now that you're in the world." I finished shakily. He smiled at me, "I can see why you got in." I could feel myself blush, "thanks." I took a bite of the sandwich and chewed thoughtfully. I just couldn't help but wonder why Ansel wanted to sit with me, I wasn't particularly friendly and I wasn't too attractive. I mean I guess I looked kind of okay, but I wasn't pretty in the way where guys threw themselves at me. God no. I was just average. Just Olivia. "what are you thinking about?" Ansel's voice snapped me out of my thoughts and I looked up at him and said , " I just can't really seem to figure out why you would want to hang out with me." He stared at me like he was thinking and then he answered me saying ,"I watched you reading The Giver through English and whenever you smiled or laughed or frowned I realized how infatuated you were with a fake person and I couldn't help but to wonder what would happen if you were with a real one." I took one look at him and burst out laughing "god damn." I choked out "That was a really bad excuse to have lunch with me." he chuckled,"Im not so great at thinking on my feet." He smiled at me and I thought " God you're attractive." He raised an eyebrow at me and I said," Did I say that out loud? Shit! This was going so well!" He laughed again and said to me " I hate to do this but I need to go to my tutor. He's probably pissed because, as of now I'm half an hour late." He wrote something on a piece of paper, tore it out of his notebook and handed it to me. " text me in about 5 minutes, my tutor doesn't actually help me he just reads and glares at me while I do homework and I could use some humor to get me through the rest of the period." I stood up to relocate to the corner of the courtyard for maximum invisibility and he gave me a hug and then ran yelling," Text me!" I smiled. Maybe this year wouldn't be so bad after all.
