I bolted through the front door and called out for my mom. There wasn't an answer so I rushed to her bedroom. I impatiently knocked and called for her but there wasn't an answer so I opened the door and looked inside. No one was there.

Where was she?

I ran back downstairs to the living room. Empty. I headed to the kitchen and that's when I noticed something. Groceries were laid out on the counter and the kitchen was a complete mess.

"Mom?"

There was a sound like something fell outside. The sound frighten me. My heart rate picking up speed.

I turned my attention in the direction I assumed the sound came from. That's when I noticed the door through the kitchen that led to the back yard was open.

Someone was here.

I hesitated a bit before I finally took the first step towards the door. It felt like I was waking for miles, for days to reach the door. But in actuality it was less than twenty seconds.

I paused at the door and lift my hand to push it open. Something in me told me to stop but I just had to find out what was going on. Who was outside?

I took a deep breathe and finally pushed the door open.

SURPRISE!

"What's going?"

I was definitely surprised when I saw the group of people standing around in the back yard. A table which had a large chocolate cake along with other drinks and snacks was there in the middle of everything.

"Happy birthday sweetheart!" My mom emerged from the back of the crowd and toward me. She wrapped her arms around me in an extremely loving hug which almost stopped my breathing because of how tight she was hugging me.

When she finally let go Simone, who I hadn't noticed before, wasted no time in greeting me with a similar hug like mom's. Caleb was close behind her holding a few boxes which were wrapped in colourful wrapping paper.

"Don't tell me you forgot your own birthday?" Simone asked before releasing me.

"Of course not," I lied because I had completely forgotten, "I thought you forgot. When did you get back?"

"This morning. I couldn't possibly have missed your birthday, could I?" She was glowing with happiness. I guess everything went well on the trip with Caleb and his parents.

"I bought you something," she turned to Caleb and took a medium size box from him. "Don't open it yet though."

"Okay," I answered. Trying my best to return her enthusiasm.

"Happy birthday Shan," Caleb said stepping forward.

"Thanks," I gave my best smile.

"This is from me," he handed me a big box wrapped in blue wrapping paper. I lifted a curious brow at him.

"You'll find out what it is later. And this..." he reached into his jacket pocket and took out a much smaller box, "is from Josh."

I took the box from Caleb, unsure why Josh would get me a gift. I hadn't spoken to him since I gave him back his jacket.

On the box was written Tiffany's. My eyes widen in astonishment when I saw the diamond earrings resting in the box. My jaw dropped and I almost toppled over because of how beautiful the earrings were.

"These are amaazzzzzzzzing!"

Caleb chuckled a bit, "By the way your eyes are glowing, I can tell they are."

"I can't accept these," I quickly closed the box and handed it back to Caleb but he didn't take them.

"Yes you can. Josh isn't in the country so you can't return them. I guess someone's been a good girl," a smirk played on Caleb's face and I instantly started to blush.

"Oh my gosh!" Simone practically shouted, "You didn't-"

I gasped, "Of course not!" I looked around thankful that mom wasn't in earshot of the question Simone's was about to ask me.

I guess Josh never mentioned the last time we spoken to them. They probably think we're still dating.

"Okay everybody! Let's have some fun!" Mom shouted from across the table. The small crowd roared as the volume of the music climbed.

I mingled a bit afterwards. Thanking everyone for attending my party and for the gifts I got. Most of the people there were friends from school, which were Scott and a few of Caleb's football friends and their girlfriend of the month, and some of mom's work friends. Even the guy mom was dating came. She introduced us later on and he was really polite-like.

When it was time to cut the cake, while I was standing at the table with mom ready and waiting, a text message came in on my phone. I quickly glanced at it before mom was finished instructing Caleb on how to take our picture.

Happy Birthday. J.

I smiled to myself.

"Happy Birthday," I whispered to myself.
