CHAPTER TWO:
THE NEW KID
DIANA SAT DOWN IN A DISTRACTED DAZE. Her mind was still running through every interaction she had with her boyfriend, picking through her existence for anything that would portray her as desperate. She was so wrapped up in her thoughts that she didn't notice class had begun. Her English teacher, Mr. Morales, stood at the front of the room with a stack of papers in his hands. He droned on about the book they were reading, giving a lengthy summary about the latest chapter they were assigned to read.
The Great Gatsby was a novel Diana read two years prior and had no intention of reading it again, but after she found out that her mid-semester project would revolve around it, she had to reconsider. About a third of her final grade depended on that project and there was no way she'd do poorly on it. She knew how badly her father would react if there was a drop in her grad point average.
Her chin was resting in the palm of her hand as she stared out the classroom window, her thoughts only interrupted by the sound of the door opening.
"Ah, there you are," Mr. Morales mused, turning to the class. "Everyone welcome our new student, William Hargrove."
"Billy," a gruff voice corrected.
Tina, who was sitting behind her, kicked the back of Diana's chair causing her to jerk forward. With furrowed brows and an incredulous look, Diana looked back at her in question.
"It's him." Tina grinned as she gestured to the boy standing at the front of the class.
Diana slowly faced the front, reluctantly following her gaze. Her sights landed on a tall, curly haired blond staring at the class like it was a new challenge to conquer. His skin was slightly sun-kissed skin, probably from living in California per the licence plates she caught a glimpse of earlier that morning. The denim jacket he wore matched his jeans perfectly and while she usually hated the fashion trend of denim on denim, he somehow made it work. He looked exactly like the kind of guy who would piss her off by taking her parking spot.
Billy Hargrove was attractive and judging by the smirk on his face, he knew it.
"Okay, Billy," Mr. Morales corrected as Diana looked out the window again, "take a seat."
The sound of chairs scraping against the linoleum floor cut through the air as girls straightened up in their seats. Most of her classmates looked all too eager to catch Billy's attention.
Robin, the girl who usually sat next to Diana, was absent today leaving her desk vacant. She wasn't worried about Billy sitting next to her, though. There was a row of empty seats at the back of the classroom and he struck her as the type of person to prefer that seating arrangement.
Her head was turned, so she didn't see the way Billy strolled down the aisle without a care in the world. She expected him to pass her, but he never did.
