I grab the present. I shake off all the crumbs and put it back in my bag.

I guess he just...

Oh who am I kidding.

He didn't even bother opening it. A year falls out of my eye as I close the bag.

I look around and see Ethan looking at me from the corner. I try to smile but fail miserably.

I just walk away. Into class and away from him. I spent so much time on that gift.

I don't care if I spent money on it, because money is just paper, but I spent time on it.

Time is way more valuable than money.

. . .

The bell rings signaling that it's time for lunch. I head outside and take out the bag of brownies I made yesterday.

I also take out the present to give it back to him. I walk towards the tree and hide behind it.

I'm about to jump out and scare him when I suddenly hear a laugh. It's not his, it's a girl.

I turn the corner and see Ethan hugging Meredith. I just stand there shocked.

"Oh look, it's Amy Rose." Meredith smiles, looking up. Ethan looks up at me and his eyes widen.

He pushes Meredith off of him gently and looks down. I clear my throat and smile.

"Yeah, uhm, I just wanted to, eherm, drop this off." I say, handing her the bag of brownies.

"Ooo." She squeals. She takes the bag and opens it. "Well I should get going. My friends are waiting for me." I lie while my voice cracks.

Ethan's head snaps up.

Great.

"Here, you dropped this." I say while handing him the present. Meredith snatches it.

"Oh. What is it?" She asks while opening tearing open the wrapping paper.

All the things fall out and Ethan looks down at it.

His face lights up. He smiles as he takes the paintbrush in his hand.

I smile at how happy he looks and walk away.

I just walk away.

. . .

I skate home while listening to Petit Biscuit. I hum to the best of "Alone" and smile.

The air hits my face and it's so fresh. I didn't wait for Ethan this time. Knowing that he'd just get a ride with Meredith.

I reach my driveway and I skate all the way to the door. I stop and pick up my skateboard.

I take my headphones off to hear someone shouting my name. I raise an eyebrow and turn around.

I see Ethan walking up my driveway. Here we go, let's hear the wonderful details of him and Meredith.

"Hi. What are you doing here?" I ask with a smile. He looks at me and shakes his head.

"Stop acting like that." He orders and I look up at him with confusion.

"Like what?" I ask gently. He looks at me.and lets out a bug breath.

"Like you're fine! Like you weren't just crying earlier!" He shouts in my face. I back away and scoff.

"I wasn't crying, they where alergi-" I start to half lie gently, but he cuts me off.

"I know that you're lying, Amethyst, you love making eye contact with people, but not when you lie. You always look away." He states.

"No I don't."
