Once upon a time there lived a little boy and his grandmother. They lived in a small cottage on the edge of town, because, you see, the whole village was convinced that the boy's grandmother was a witch. They believed that the boy should not be living with his grandmother, the witch. On a rainy day in the middle of April the villagers decided to do something about the witch. The chancellor gathered the entire village in the town square, and instructed them all to bring a pitchfork or some sort of weapon. Then they started out for the cottage at the edge of town.
On that very day it just so happened to be the little boy's 10th birthday. And just as a very hard knock on the door came the little boy blew out his birthday candles. The boy's grandmother hobbled over to the window to see who could be at her little cottage on this day. As she looked out the window she gasped, "Jimmy! It's the villagers." The little boy, Jimmy, ran over to the window! "Grandmother," he said, "What do we do?" Jimmy's grandmother walked over to the trunk at the end of her bed and pulled out a brown backpack. She walked over and gave it to Jimmy. " Jimmy," she said, " Take this backpack and run into the forest, don't look back just keep running!" Jimmy, feeling scared and confused, started to cry but did what his grandmother told him to.
He hurried out the backdoor just as he heard the door swing open and hit the wall! Jimmy ran with all his might into the forest. Just as his grandmother had said, he did not look back, not even for a second. He ran and ran into the forest until he could no longer breathe. Jimmy fell to the ground sobbing and gasping for air! He cried himself to sleep thinking of his grandmother.
When Jimmy awoke it was morning, he opened his eyes, they were red and puffy. He got up off the forest floor, dusted himself off, and picked up the backpack his grandmother gave him. He opened it and reached inside. Jimmy found a compass, what looked to be a loaf of bread, a box of matches, and a lantern. He heaved the backpack on and started walking deeper into the woods. As Jimmy marched along the forest he took a stick and marked every tree he went by.
After what seemed like a lifetime of walking Jimmy stopped to rest on a boulder near a running river. He put his backpack down and walked over to the river to refresh his face, as he wiped off the water, he saw something out of the corner of his eye. Jimmy looked in the direction he had seen the mysterious figure, but there was nothing there. " whatever it was," thought Jimmy, " It must have been really fast." Jimmy stood and walked back over to the boulder to get his backpack. "Oh No!" Jimmy muttered to himself, "It's gone!!" He looked everywhere, under rocks, behind bushes, even in the river, but it was no use the backpack was nowhere to be found. Suddenly, something bounded out of the trees headed straight for Jimmy. Startled he leapt back and knocked his head on a big boulder. He fell to the ground, unconscious.
As Jimmy's eyes fluttered open, to his surprise, there standing on his chest was a gray and blue polka-dotted bunny. He thought he heard the bunnie speak, " that's ridiculous" thought Jimmy, " animals can't talk,.... can they?" He was still a little fuzzy from the knock on the head. Jimmy, still processing what had happened noticed that behind the bunny was his backpack. "Hey, that's my backpack!!" yelled Jimmy. "Finders keepers, losers weepers," sang the bunny in a mocking tone. Jimmy gasped, "Did that bunny just speak!?" "Yeah I can speak, you carrot for brains! I'm an enchanted bunny, can't you tell from my blue polka-dots?", demanded the bunny. "An enchanted bunny? How is that even possible???" "Anything is possible" said the bunny. "My name is Sir Lancelot Wellington lll" "That's a funny name" said Jimmy " Actually it is a name only given to those in the royal bloodline." said the bunny in a very regal manner. " You're a prince!?" Jimmy said very shocked "Yes, I am second in line to the throne." Jimmy got up off the ground and grabbed his backpack. " Hey, I found that backpack, it's mine!" yelled Sir Lancelot Wellington the third " No it isn't, this is my backpack. I set it by the boulder while I washed my face after my long walk." Jimmy said
Lancelot, the bunny, jumped up and kicked Jimmy on the shin. " Oww!" Jimmy said, " That hurt!!" " that was the point, Radish Head!" Lancelot lunged for the backpack, Jimmy pushed a little to hard and Lancelot slipped into the river. " HELP! I can't swim!!" screamed Lancelot as the water rushed over his head.
Jimmy's face went pale as a ghost. "I don't know my own strength,"he thought. As Jimmy snapped back to reality, he remembered that Lancelot was drowning. Jimmy dove into the river and started to swim toward the helpless bunny. He grabbed Lancelot and started swimming back toward the shore. Jimmy flopped Lancelot on the ground and dragged himself up onto the dirt. Lancelot, wheezing for air and coughing up water, pushed himself up off the ground. " Where did you learn to swim like that!?" Lancelot asked Jimmy "My grandmother would always take me down to the edge of the creek and teach me how to swim" Jimmy said in a sad tone. "Where is your grandmother now?" asked Lancelot. "The villagers took her and I don't know what they're going to do to her." Then he started to sniffle. Jimmy was now soaking wet and about to cry, he was not able to control it and started to bawl.
Lancelot didn't know what to do. He reached over and patted Jimmy's shoulder softly. When Jimmy finally stopped crying the sun was going down. " I didn't know such a small boy could have that many tears." Lancelot said relieved. Jimmy, realizing that the sun was setting on the horizon said, "I need to start making a place to sleep tonight." He stood, grabbed his backpack, and walked over to some trees that acted like an overhanging. Jimmy found some soft wild grass and made a small bed for himself. Lancelot just sat and watched what he did with wonder. By the time Jimmy was done making himself a comfy place to sleep, the sun had gone down and and the moon was rising. Jimmy ate a small piece of bread, took off his shoes, layed down and began thinking. For a moment he just lay there looking up at the sky, then he turned on his side and fell asleep. Lancelot, needing a place to sleep, crept over and curled up next to Jimmy's head. Jimmy and Lancelot slept peacefully that night curled up next to each other, Jimmy dreaming of swimming with his grandmother and Lancelot dreaming of being crowned king.
