a small time had passed and milo felt there was something wrong. heather holloway, the other lifeguard that worked at hawkins public pool, hadn't been there since a few days ago, leaving the two boys alone together. it didn't seem to bother billy, other than having to work double, but the other boy was nervous. about heather, about billy, about being alone with him. there was such tension between the boys, it could be sliced.
milo stood at the counter waiting to check-in. "no heather again?" he asked the manager, tapping his nails on the counter anxiously. the manager's gray eyes stayed glued to his magazine, "nope, but these two girls did come by yesterday with her bag, they said that they were going to give it back to her."
milo didn't know how to respond, all that he could respond with was, "oh. . . ok." it was obvious he didn't care. the manager seemed too young for the job. he wished someone was as worried as he was about the young girl.
he turned away and went up the lifeguard chair. billy had just ended his shift as he was just now talking to Karen Wheeler. that was something that really bothered the dayes boy. he didn't like how billy interacted with the older woman. he hasn't felt that way ever, about anything or anyone.
seeing them two, turned modest little milo into a bitter boy. he felt possessive as if he were a kid overprotecting a candy bar. he didn't like those feelings, it made him feel dull. he watched them closely, studying their expressions. he was jealous. but didn't want to believe it.
he let out a small defeated sigh and there he sat perched, letting the day go by.time passed and it was soon closing time. regularly milo would go straight home. but today was a different day. "hey there buddy," the taller boy approached him. "wanna stay for a while longer and swim? i don't feel like going home today." he enticed. he knew there was something wrong. this was new for billy to be asking him to stay a while longer at the pool. he didn't want to be rude. so he accepted. "i uhh. . . sure?" there was a little bit of concern still running in his mind. what if papa was waiting for him? what if he got worried? but he ignored all the questions. "alright I'll wait for you when you're ready." he winked and walked to the locker room.
there was a tingling sensation in milo's body. he was nervous. it felt like a date. but he didn't want to have a date. . . with a boy. Especially not at the Hawkins public pool. But something about the whole situation, while it made every cell in his body shiver, was calming. Billy walked back out from the locker rooms and familiar cologne scent followed close behind him. Milo hesitated to look up from the pool and face what he had agreed too. He felt a cold hand press against his lower stomach and once again, shivered. What was he doing?
This was fine. Milo was fine. Well that was until just a cold hand in an untouched place turned into a soft whisper. "Hold your breath." Milo felt billy try to push him into the pool, and before he could even think to hold his breath, his father crossed his mind and the jingling of keys rattled in the distance. And then he was being pulled up again.it was their tedious manager, seeing the two boys hanging around. he looked at them with crude eyes, he was not pleased with what he was seeing. "what are you two fags doing? you should be leaving by now." he spat bluntly. milo's face had turned bright pink, embarrassed. billy, on the other hand, was enraged. his hands balled into fists. "what the fuck did you just say?" he hissed, stepping forward. milo tugged the loose ends of the angry boy's tank top lightly, trying to stop him.
"woah woah hey hargrove! what's your damage? you still want this job right?" the manager recalled, defensive but with a pompous smile.
at that moment, billy stayed quiet and milo let go of his shirt immediately. "that's what i thought. " the manager continued his tasteless bantering."y-you know im not a fairy... i just wanted to hang out with my buddy here and have a beer." billy directed towards the younger boy, but that worried him that alcohol was involved. the man tossed them the keys, "whatever queers, you guys know what to do when you're finished... doing whatever... lock up." he slid his sunglasses on and walked away, leaving the two boys alone again.
"fucking asshole." billy muttered spitefully as soon as the manager had left. "that was... bad." milo was kinda left speechless. he wanted to know why billy was really upset at the managers comments. like yes, the comments were rude, but the young man was fuming. he felt it wasn't a good time to ask. so he continued. "s-so what do we do?" he asked, attempting to move on from the drama.
billy looked up at the sky calling to dusk. a mischievous smirk started to rise on his face. he turned to face milo, his crystal ball eyes meeting with his...
"take off your clothes."
