It all started on a beautiful morning. The sun was rising and the birds were chirping. Tom had just eaten his breakfast and was going as fast as he could to meet the army general, Bing.
When he walked into the room, through those massive doors, Tom was in awe when he saw the royal room. Only the most elite and important people went in here. Tom had only managed glances in this very room. There was a marble floor, huge windows that held a pinkish tint and at the end of it all, small stairs leading up to the throne, where only royal blood could sit.
"Oh you're finally here." Bing sighed, standing on the stairs, glaring at Tom, "You're late." He growled in annoyance.
"Yeah I know but it was because I had to eat a big breakfast for this important mission you're sending me on!" Tom tried to find an excuse even though he didn't know what his mission was yet.
"Sure, anyway you are to accompany Prince Edd to the nearby kingdom as his royal guard, there you will protect him and make sure he is safe." Bing said.
"W-what," Tom stuttered.
This was huge. Every living soldier's dream was to be a royal guard of royal blood, where they went, they followed, what they had, they had too, when they lived in royalty, they did too. If the soldiers did a good job they would offer them whatever they desired; money, recognition, glory anything.
"You will travel with him on carriage, wherever he goes you follow, and when you arrive you are to ensure his safety, is that clear?" Bing asked.
"Yes sir, I am to take Prince Edd to the kingdom and stay with him at all times" Tom repeated to Bing, "But if I may ask, how come you're just sending me?"
"Because we need many soldiers here to fight other battles and to stand guard, plus you're a special case." Tom then understood.
This ability of his was a curse that was done because of his father, he didn't blame him though, he was only doing it to save his mom. She had been deathly sick, her head cracked (lol she's a bowling ball) and was pregnant with Tom so the pineapple seeked out a witch that could save them but it would cause an effect on Tom. Nothing happened at first when Tom was born but slowly he showed signs of being able to transform into a monster. His true form wasn't shown until Bing saw him in the forest when he was running away from home, he took him in as a soldier.
"Anyway, you'll be going with just him, the king and queen are currently busy doing other things so they will arrive later. Once you arrive, you will eat dinner and meet another prince." Bing continued, "And one more thing, I need you to repeat the soldier's oath." Bing said.
"I will sacrifice my blood for the royal one to be safe." Tom declared.
Bing then motioned for Tom to follow him to meet the Prince. When he opened the door, there stood the queen, king and prince.
"Your highnesses." Tom dropped onto his knee and bowed at them.
"Is this the best soldier you can get?" The queen asked.
"Yes, he's the one I told you about." Bing replied.
"I see," The queen looked down at Tom in his black eyes, "You will protect my son with your life, if anything, and I mean anything, happens to him, you will be punished." She said coldly.
"I understand your highness." Tom said as he stood back up.
"You'll leave first thing tomorrow, head to your chambers, pack up what you need and meet Prince Edd back here in the morning." The king and queen said before they walked away.
Bing dismissed Tom and let him go to his room. As soon as they were out of sight, Tom ran to his room and slammed the door. The place wasn't really his room, it consisted of 11 other soldiers that slept there too on bunk beds. He took a deep breath and quickly packed up what he needed in a sack. He packed some clothing, water and bacon (enchanted with a spell so they wouldn't go bad)
"You aren't going to run way are you?" Asked someone from behind, a fellow soldier.
"No of course not, I'm heading out to protect our prince." Tom said to none other than Jon.
"Really? Congrats!" Jon said before he went to shine his sword.
Tom made sure that everything he needed was in there and for the rest of the day trained to make sure he could protect Prince Edd from anything that came for him. He trained with punching bags and went head to head combat with Bing.
"You need to be more focused, you are too predictable with your movements and you could barely block me!" Bing was annoyed that Tom couldn't even defend himself right.
"Come on, let's do this again." Bing gave Tom his hand but Tom slapped it away.
"Why did you give me this job, you could've given it to anyone, so why did you give it to me?!" Tom was ready to cry.
"I don't know if I can-"
"Yes you can, and you will, if you are to fail, they will kill you and I will be a disgrace, the queen wanted you and you will do as she and I say" Then Bing's second in command, Larry, took him for a special meeting, leaving Tom alone with his thoughts.
What if he couldn't protect the prince? Why did they have to go to another kingdom? Would they kill him if he failed? Tom chose not to think about it for now and carried on with his usual duties. He changed shifts with one of the guards to protect the castle and then cleaned his armor and sharpened his sword. After a long day, Tom decided to sleep.
"Hey I heard about your voyage, good luck on your trip" Another knight said to him before Tom went to bed, but Tom was up for hours, knowing he was going to need more than luck.
