The next morning Edd and Tom left the inn. At this point Edd was fully going at the front with Tom so they could change shifts. Although they did change shifts they would talk most of the time. Sometimes about their favorite things to do, how their lives were different from one another, and so on.
"How did a pineapple and a bowling ball make a human?" Edd asked.
"Well you see, when a pineapple and a bowling ball love each other very much..."
"Alright I don't need all the details." Edd laughed.
"There's a reason I have completely black eyes, my mom had holes for eyes while my father was just eyeless. Kind of horrific if you think about it," Tom said, "People look at you like your a freak just because you have two black eyes."
"Well maybe, but I don't see it that way, I think they're beautiful." Edd said.
'Why's that?" Tom asked.
"Well they remind me of a night sky." Edd began.
"A night sky that's completely black?" He questioned.
"That's the best part, with your eyes, anyone can imagine the perfect night sky because there's nothing incredibly distinct about it to make it look like a specific night. Many people can say they have eyes that look like the sky but not everyone can say they have eyes that look like the night." Edd said.
"That's a nice way to put it," Tom liked the idea of his eyes looking like the night sky, "Night time is my favorite thing about this planet, not only because of the starry nights but because you get to sleep."
Edd laughed and agreed with him.
"So how much longer until we get there?" Edd asked.
"Well seeing as we left early today and have more time to cover more ground, I'll assume, two or three days." Tom said.
Even though Edd wanted to continue talking to Tom he eventually took a little nap. At first his dreams were all stupid and fun. There was one where he was being chased around by a zombie, another one where he was in hell, it was all very strange. Things took a turn when he found himself in a room, and there was only a single window looking out into the outside. When he looked out, all he saw were clouds and the tops of trees, he then looked down and found himself far from the ground. He backed up immediately, scared he would fall and called for help but his voice was gone. No one would be able to hear him. He didn't know what to do, he was so scared.
"Edd, it's alright, I'm here." Even though he was all the way up in a tower and seemingly no one was up there with him, he heard a voice loud and clear.
Out of nowhere a head popped out the window he was looking out from and saw those two black eyes.
"Tom, what are you doing here?" His voice came back, quiet but there.
"I came here to save you, take my hand and I'll get you out of here." He gave him a heart warming smile, and without a beat, Edd took his hand.
"Don't let go!" He pulled him closer and went all the way down to the ground.
"Thank you, that was so much fun!" Edd said as he saw the huge trees that seemed so small when he was up in the castle.
His excitement was short lived when he saw a dragon rise from the forest and charge at him.
"Watch out!" Tom yelled before slicing the head off the dragon and watching it collapse.
"How did you do that?!" Edd asked, he was impressed how he could just kill such a thing just like that.
"It's simple, you just need to know how to swing a sword." Tom said.
"But what if I don't know how?" Edd asked.
"Here I can help you," Tom wrapped his arms around Edd and helped him swing, "Soon you'll be able to defend yourself." Tom whispered into his ear."
"But what if I want you to help me." Edd asked aloud but when he looked behind him, Tom was gone.
"Tom? Tom!" Edd yelled but no response came back, just echos.
"Edd, I'm here," He looked around for the voice but there was no owner to it, "Edd it's okay," Edd began to panic and tried to search for a way out of this place.
"Edd wake up!" Edd opened his eyes to find himself in the carriage and in a small village.
"Are you alright? You kept making weird sounds while you were sleeping."
"Yes, I'm fine, I was just having a small nightmare that's all." He looked away and felt bad that he was lying but he found his dream embarrassing.
"Wait a minute, why are we here?" Edd asked as he looked around.
"Well I came here to get us some more food but after seeing you, we can also get some potions to push away the nightmares." Tom offered.
"No really, I'm fine, I think I'm just homesick, that's all," Edd said to calm Tom but he knew something was off, "Well alright, you stay here, I will be back soon, take care of the carriage and if anyone tries to attack you," Tom handed Edd his sword, "You swing this sword." Tom said as he walked away to the markets.
Edd sat there worried over the nightmare, nervous something bad was coming. When he was a kid he had nightmares all the time, after he had gotten his powers. The one he could mainly remember was when he was in a field, sitting in the grass and admiring the beauty of it all while holding his father and his mother's hand. It was all fine until they heard a loud crash from behind them, and in the blink of an eye both of his parents were gone and the grass turned red as he saw blood splattered everywhere, people shouting, bombs landing and people falling to the ground. Edd was horrified what he had seen in his nightmare and ran to his parents room to sleep there for the night. Ever since then Edd had always known something horrible was coming when he had nightmares, because just after that dream the next day, the same scene unfolded outside in the fields.
"Hello there pretty boy, what's a boy like you doing here?" Asked a deranged man.
He had a red and white eyes and had messy blond hair.
"You look like someone who would have a lot of valuables," He smiled as he got closer to the carriage.
Edd squeezed the sword with his shaking hand and slowly started to raise it, hoping Tom would come back soon.
"Oh come on, you don't actually think you can fight me with that thing do you?" The man smiled and began to trace his hand over the carriage looking it over like he was about to buy it.
"How about this, you give me any sort of jewelry you have and I'll be on my way." He smiled.
Edd pointed the sword towards his face and thanked himself for not putting on his crown this morning, "I'm s-sorry but the answer is no." He hoped the man didn't hear his stutter.
The man reached out and touched the tip of the sword and pulled it to towards him.
"I don't think you want to do that boy..." He pulled the sword away but Edd just held on tighter, but his legs did not comply as he fell face first onto the dirt floor.
He felt the sword leave his hands and when he looked up, the sword was pointed right at his face.
"Might want to tell me where the valuables are before I leave a nasty scar on that pretty face of yours."
Edd could feel tears brim up, he felt so small. Tom had trusted him to take care of the carriage and he couldn't even do that right.
"Is there a problem here?" Edd turned look at his savior, Tom, standing there.
"Nothing to worry about, move along now please," The man said as he pointed the sword towards Tom.
Tom looked at the man up and down and kicked his crotch. He groaned in pain as his knees landed to the floor. Tom quickly picked up his sword and Edd.
"Are you alright?" Tom asked as they quickly left the village.
"Yes I just need to calm down," Edd gave Tom a weak smile and tried to hide the tears that were still there.
