A cool morning breeze flowed through an open window. The sound of pidgeotto and spearow echoed across the peaceful semi-suburban neighbourhood. Sunlight shone through an open window, washing over the face of a young American-Asian boy in his bed. A lawn mower started up nearby, causing the boy to wince at the sudden noise. There was a knock at the bedroom door. A young woman in loose-fitting turquoise pajamas opened the door, her dark brown hair flopping in front of her face. A toothbrush hung loosely in the corner of her mouth, as she brushed the hair out of her face. "Nate! Get up now, and get ready! I don't want us to be late for the Pokémon Festival!" The woman yelled.
"Alright, sis, I'm up! I'm up," Nate yawned, pulling the sheets off of him and slowly standing up. The woman quickly left, grabbed a small ball of clothing, and entered the room again, throwing it at Nate, knocking him back onto his bed. "Augh! What the heck, Susie?"
The girl snickered, "Get dressed, dork! I'm meeting my friends by the river in 10 minutes, and I don't want to be seen walking around with a kid in Pikachu pajamas."
Nate looked down, and awkwardly grinned. "Alright fine; I'll get these clothes on, but next time try to wake me up a little earlier, alright?"
"Whatever you say, dork. 9 minutes." Susie smirked as she shuts the door.Nate leaned against the side of the house, as his sister locked it behind them. "C'mon Susie. I thought you were in a rush to see your friends or something."
"I'm making sure nobody comes in and steals our stuff, Nate. Besides, the river's just a stone's throw from here. We'll make it on time." Susie made sure the door was locked, before putting the keys in her purse. Susie walked down the gravel path, towards the small road adjacent to the house. Nate hesitantly followed behind, making sure to keep some distance between himself and his sister. Susie turned towards Nate, and motioned for him to come beside her, "Come on, Nate! It's not that embarrassing walking down to the festival with me, is it?" Nate paused for a bit, before catching up to his sister. Susie then pulled him close, into a side-hug. "Come on, Nate. Why don't you want to hang out with your sister?"
Nate looked up at Susie, sighed, and said, "You're always taking me to do stuff with your friends. I'm like a purse dog; an accessory. All of my friends left town last year, when the professor gave them their starters. All of them. There's, like, no other kids my age anymore."
Susie rolled her eyes, "There's still kids your age here. Like... uhm... Sam! And... the Sakura twins! They're still here."
"Yeah. Sam, the bully; who always gets what he wants from his rich parents. I've told you about him, right?"
"Yeah. Sorry I forgot... and why not the Sakura twins?"
"They don't like hanging out with people. They normally try to make friends with other Pokémon. Unless they are forced to, they don't normally visit places with lots of people; especially the Pokémon Festival."
"Really? I've seen them a lot recently playing along our street..." Nate and Susie rounded a corner, the river now in sight. There was a group of girls all standing by the riverside, chatting and laughing. One of them turned, noticing the two, and waved. Susie's face suddenly brightened up, in recognition and excitement. "The girls! They're already there! HEY NANCY!!" Susie waved back, jumping up slightly to make herself more noticeable. More of the group turned, and began waving as well. After a couple of seconds of waving at each other, the group by the river motioned for Susie to hurry down. "Alright. I'm going to head down there. The festival is just-"
"Yes I know I've gone every year; down the road and take a left before you get to the river, then straight ahead towards the pier. You don't need to worry about me, sis. I'm 15. I can mostly take care of myself now."
Susie sighed, "I know, I know. I just... I'm worried about you. After that incident with Mom and Dad-"
"I'll be fine. Don't worry about me. The roads have all been closed off, so we don't have to worry about any cars. I'll just be hanging out at the festival all day. We know where to find each other, so nothing bad should happen."
"Okay... Okay... Just, please call me if anything happens. Alright?" Susie looked over to her friends eagerly, then back to Nate.
"Got it. Love you, sis." Nate smiled, and hugged Susie. Susie hugged Nate back.
"Love you too, bro," Nate let go, and ran down towards the festival. Susie stood there for a moment, taking in everything around her, "Love you too."
