Dream Land: A reflection on the human race

Last night, as I slipped into REM
Beautiful visions filled my head
I dreamed of a world, pure and untouched
I dreamed of a land no one could corrupt

But I woke up and remembered it was only a dream
And realized I must face the reality:
Real life is filled with darkness and despair
This planet called earth is a living nightmare

In the world of my dreams, no man judged one another
But today I heard a boy shot his own mother
They say that the demons got into his head
But if he was darker, by now he'd be dead
But because his skin is the color of snow
They gave him 2 months of therapy before letting him go

The kids at my school obsess over a new phone
While kids around the world don't even own a home
In my dreamland, the place of fantasies
Everyone shared and no one slept hungry
But half my earth starves and their stomachs cave in
While the other half searches for ways to stay thin

And no one focuses on the problem at hand
The virus killing our species, a plague called man

The human race is so egotistical
We called the moral choice "humane"
We lie to ourselves that "it's the only option"
As we watch the bombs fall from our planes
We say we aren't cruel,
We are civilized, we are tamed
Yet we slaughter all His creatures
We torture, taunt, and maim

Today I must face the truth
I'm part of the problem myself
I stand idly by as we kill one another
I want to scream
I want to fight
I want to change
but I can't break out of the shell
Writing this poem has made me see
Real life's a living hell

My planet is a nightmare
Ran by a species so cruel
And when one finally thinks rationally
They are attacked and called a fool
So rise up, you fools
Come and make a stand
Save us from ourselves
Liberate this imprisoned land

Wake up, you dreamers
Come make a change
Make your dreams a reality
Make our nightmare go away
