“Don’t act like you don’t…”
I fell asleep to the feeling of Harry playing with my hair, and a weight lifted from my heart.
I woke up to the soft sound of a familiar voice calling my name.
“Ava?” I looked up to find Harry’s mum smiling down at me.
“Oh hello Joanne.” I stifle a yawn. I try to stand but am yanked back down into the chair next to Harry’s bed. When I look, Harry has got his large palm wrapped around my bicep. “Where are you going?”
“Ava’s gonna go home and change and meet her brother and then she’ll be back to get you.” Joanne leans over my shoulder.
“Okay.” Harry says releasing my arm.
“I’ll be right back Harry.”
“Okay. Please drive safe sweetheart.”
…
“So…” Joseph drags out as we drive back to the hospital. He looks different from last time I saw him. It seems as if he has added another inch on his lengthy frame. His once ironed and tucked in flannel is now loose and opened a bit. His dark hair is messier and his arms are fuller. Has he been working out? For who? I smile to myself at the thought of Joseph trying to “woo” a girl. He is so awkward, but in a charming way. Any girl would be lucky to have him. Hell, I’m lucky to have him as a brother. “What exactly are you guys?” He finally asks.
“Who?” I ask, but I already have an idea of who he is talking about.
“You and Harry.”
“Well, he’s um… he’s-”
“Do you like him?”
“Yeah”
“Does he like you?”
“I don’t know-”
“Never mind that was a stupid question, why wouldn’t he? He would be blind if he didn’t- oh! Sorry.”
I laugh. “It’s fine.”
An awkward silence swallowed the car for a moment but Joseph was not about to let it consume us. “So is he like completely blind, or can he see certain colors, or-”
“He’s completely blind.”
“Does he still have his eyes?”
“Yes.”
“Dammit.”
“Joseph!” I look over at him. Has he gone mad?
“Sorry, I just thought it’d be cool to see someone with just eye sockets.”
“You are disturbed.”
He smirks, but doesn’t deny my claim. “Don’t act like you don’t want to see that on somebody.”
