Break Away

That night for some reason, was freezing cold and eerie. My body wouldn't budge no matter how hard I tried. I had caught my foot against a giant tree root and had fallen down on the empty tarred road, injuring the side of my head. The chirping of the crickets and the croaking of the frogs was the cacophony I was drowned in. They sounded as though they were mocking me. I heard faint footsteps approaching and no sooner than that had I sunk into oblivion.

...........

I was a bit startled when I saw the environment I was in after I woke up. I was in a little candle-lit room. I sat on the tiny bed and scanned the room. I was surrounded by cleaning supplies and a pile of old brown voluminous books. I did not know where I was but I must say, I was pleased I wasn't back in my own 'home'. I figured I was in a room under a staircase. I could tell from its slanting ceiling. Upon realising that my first was clenched, I opened it and saw my precious trinket in my palm. It was all that mattered at the moment. It was safe with me.

As soon as I walked to the door it flung open. In front of me is a friendly looking young man smiling at me.

"Ah! That's a good girl, you're awake, come let me fix you something to eat."

I didn't want to eat because, what if he was going to fatten me like a Christmas pork and cook me later? But his warm smile made me think 'what could go wrong'. I was famished.
He sent me to the kitchen and gave me some pie and some weird but tasty juice which I gobbled down in a matter of minutes...more like seconds.

"That's we have at the moment."

"Uhh...thank you very much sir I was indeed very hungry." I say, not so sure of what to call him...my head was still throbbing from that fall.

" Such humble behaviour. Call me Cook Barry or just Barry. Now that's some filth you have all around your face. Let me show you the bathroom and take a shower. You can nap afterwards."
This was getting wierd. Wasn't he going to ask me where I'm from. Wait. How did I get here?

With that, we climb the stairs he showed me a bathroom.

"Use any of the folded towels."he said, gesturing to the bathroom door.

I nodded. The house was very big, expensive and not really occupied I thought to myself.
After the shower I looked better. When I combed my short black curly hair, I looked even better. I stared at my reflection in the mirror. Carefully scrutinizing the skinny dark-skinned 5"4 girl with very big bright brown eyes. Are you okay? I questioned myself.

Wrapped in a blanket-huge towel, I asked Barry if I could get something cleaner to wear. Was I getting too comfortable in this house already? He gave me a pair of black gym shorts and an oversized neon green shirt. I wore it in the bathroom and joined him in the kitchen.

"Where am I and how did I get here?" I asked with curiosity and confusion laced in my voice.

Before he could reply he rushed to the door to open it for a really pretty woman who just rang the doorbell.
She rushed in asking with much concern attached to her tone "Where is she? Is she badly injured?"
They came to the kitchen and sat by me at the table and now I was the centre of attraction.

"What is your name young lady?"

"R-Reigna." I stammered.

"Age?"

"Seventeen Ma'am."

"Mind telling us what happened to you last night before Barry found and brought you home if you recall?" She asked in a concerned manner.

I nodded. I had a minor migraine trying to recall.
"I was finishing up my homework in the attic when I heard screaming coming from my foster uncle's room. I knew something was going on as he is a heroin addict. I opened his door and saw him beating up an almost naked hooker for some reason unknown to me. I yelled at him to stop and threatened to call the police on him." I paused and held my temples.

" It was scary, he charged at me like an angry bull, hurling items at me. Finally he picked up a cricket bat and chased me out of the house. I run across the park barefooted, not really looking where I was going and came across a lot of trees and a road I wasn't familiar with.
I caught my foot against the tree root and fell on the ground hitting my head on the edge of the sidewalk. That's all I remember and after I woke up here." I narrated, very frightened and hoping not to go back home any sooner.

I don't know why, but the woman was tearing up. She wiped her tears and asked about my parents. The look on my face told her not to ask me that question now.

" Don't worry you are okay and in safe hands. My name is Leah."she paused.

"Where do you live, what are we going to do now? Do you have any relatives?"She asked me I shook my head.

We sat in an awkward silence for about 10 minutes and she let out a long breathe and said:

"Don't worry you can stay here for the meantime and we will figure something out."

We started making conversation. I learnt that she was a mother of two boys and a widow as well. Her husband Mr Orwell had died of leukaemia 2 years ago. Wow...she seems pretty strong to be handling that.

About an hour later she seemed fond of me. She took me shopping and bought really cool clothes for me and told me to be her daughter for the meantime this was really weird to me but I agreed as I didn't ever want to go back to that monster of an uncle any time soon.

I just realised I didn't have my phone with me which was a good thing because I had cut ties for some time with everything that was around me before.

When we got back home, I met her sons. A 7 year old and a 17 year old. They seemed nice. I was introduced to them but I think they heard of me before I was introduced to them. Mrs Orwell sent me to the room I was to occupy temporarily. The room was pretty.

"You know, I prepared just in case I had a daughter but now you can have it." Leah said as we entered the room.

I settled down and drifted to slumberland but not before I thanked Leah so much for taking me in.
