I can't believe I'm here! I thought to myself, looking up at the grand building known as 30 Rock. I had always wanted to visit the legendary building and here I was, getting the chance to work there.
I had been in a different line of work for the previous eleven years, a job that didn't bring me any joy. So I decided it was time to move on. I had been offering my internet and blogging skills to the Tonight Show cast through Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr. Then I was offered a rare spot as an intern for the show.
Needless to say I was in shock for a couple of days to say the least. Then the real planning began because I was living in North Carolina at the time. I made a quick trip to New York City, trying to find an apartment that I could afford. After three days of searching, I found a small apartment towards the Bronx.
I signed the paperwork and headed back to North Carolina to pack up my old life. It took about a week and help from friends to downsize my life to fit in my Chevy Traverse and my friend Carol's Nissan Titan.
Two weeks after my initial trip, I was on my way to my new life. Carol and I made it to New York in record time and she helped me get settled before she headed back to North Carolina.
The morning of my first day of work, I woke up early, showered and took time to enjoy a cup of coffee, watching the sun rise behind the high rise buildings. I was still in shock that I was even in New York and was going to be working for my favorite show.
I finished my coffee, putting my make up on before blow drying my hair and then curling it. I looked through my closet and found a nice black pencil skirt and a turquoise button up shirt. I wore a pair of sneakers before packing my red flats in my tote bag. I threw in the lunch I had made as I put my earrings in. I grabbed my water bottle and a light sweater before running out my door, locking it as I ran out the front door of my building. I drove my car to a parking lot for commuters that catch the subway into Midtown.
I got on the train and found an empty seat. I wanted to enjoy my first commute to Rockefeller Plaza. I got off a block away from 30 Rock and walked the remaining distance.
I walked into the lobby, heading to the desk that was in the corner. A young woman looked up and smiled. "How can I help you?"
"My name is Renee Cauldwell. Today's my first day as an intern for
The Tonight Show."She glanced at her computer, typing before responding, "Yes, I see that you were added to the list for a pass. Follow me, we will need to take your picture for your pass so the security guards don't hassle you."
I followed the lady to a room off from the lobby and was placed in front of a green screen.
"Okay, if you want, you can smile for this," she said, standing behind the camera. I smiled a normal smile and the camera flashed.
"Great! Follow me and we'll finish your badge."
I followed her back out of the room to the lobby where she sat down at her computer. "This will only take a couple of minutes, if you want to take a seat right over there on that bench," she said, pointing slightly before looking back to her computer.
"Sure," I replied, sitting down on the bench and watching the people coming in and out of the building as I changed from my sneakers to my flats. I could tell who worked there and who was just visiting. I was beginning to get a little nervous about meetings idols. I checked my phone, swing that I still had twenty minutes to get upstairs to meet A.D. Miles.
"Ok, all ready," the secretary said, bringing my attention back to where I was. I looked over to see her smiling and holding a badge up. I walked over and she handed me my new clearance badge and clip so I could wear it.
"Thank you so much!" I exclaimed, clipping my badge to the bottom of my shirt. I was so excited to be starting the new chapter in my life.
A/N Hope you all enjoyed this chapter. This story has been in the works for a few months but I'm just now starting to get it on here. Please let me know what you think!
