Saying Brittany Byers is scared would be the understatement of the year. She is terrified. Ten minutes have passed and her brother Will still hasn't arrived home.

"Lucas, are you there? Over." She sits on her bed waiting for an answer. Nothing. So, she tries Dustin's walkie-talkie instead, but he doesn't reply either. Brittany has this awful feeling sitting in her gut and she can't shake it.

The girl picks up her walkie-talkie and tries Mike.

"Mike, can you hear me?" Her eyes begin to fill with tears when she hears nothing.

"Mike, come in, please? I need you!"

"Bri? Is that you? Over."

"Mike, thank God you're on. I think something's wrong, over."

"Are you ok? You sound upset, over."

"Will hasn't come home yet, over."

"Wait, really? Over."

"I've called both Lucas and Distin to see if he went back to one of their houses, but they must have been in bed already. Over"

"I'm sure he's fine. He probably just got sidetracked. Over"

"I guess, I just worry is all."

"Bri?"

Brittany doesn't tell Mike about the front door or the phone hanging from the receiver. They seem like little things, but the 'what if' question looms in her mind.

"Can you stay with me until I fall asleep?"

"Sure, anything you like." She can hear the smile in his voice and it brings one to her own face.

"Thanks, Mike. Over." Brittany curls up in her bed with the walkie-talkie held close to her chest. Mike is softly rambling about his toy dinosaur when the girl drifts off into a shallow sleep.

The next morning Brittany wakes up early and quickly scribbles a note to her brother telling him that she's going to school early.

"Hey Brittany, are you up? Over" Lucas calls through her walkie-talkie as she rides through Mirkwood.

"Morning, I'm awake, over."

"Dustin and I are at Mike's house right now and he just filled us in on what happened last night, over."

Hopefully, he didn't spill everything that happened  Brittany thinks.

"I'm riding into town now. Do you all want to rind into school together? I'd like to talk in person. Over"

"Sounds good. We'll wait here for you. Over and out."
