In-Depth: Rapping

This started to become a series in a series...hehe. Alright rapping. Rapping is hard to make an In-depth considering there isn't really lesson on rapping. But I'll try my best. Let's start this In-Depth with the vocab of course.

                     Vocabulary

Beatbox

Recreating sound and rhythms of percussion or a drum machine through your mouth or voice

Bars

Slang for lyrics in a rappers song, especially when they're really good. In music notation, Bar can mean measure

Ad-Libs

Usually, a repeated phrase that's frequently used in rap music

B.P.M(Beats per minute)

Just like the name, its how many beats per minute in a song. Depending on beats per minute, the song can be fast or slow

Freestyling

 Improvising your rapping. Most songs are written down then recorded. When freestyling you didn't prepare anything and just start improvising. Heres an example

Cypher

So in my last In-depth: Dancing I also used the word, Cypher. Some dance terms also overlap with rap terms. In the rapping world, a cypher is just the same as a dance cypher. Everyone gets a turn to rap there part. And I recommend getting your friends to do this with you cause they can be a lot of fun. Here some examples

So there isn't a lot of words for rapping that I could find. Other words overlap with the producer so I want to save those words for that in-depth. Sorry about that, if you have any words for this in-depth I'll try to add them.

☽ Get the confidence, When rapping you need to have the confidence to have a good stage presence. Don't look down when rapping, look at your audience.

☽ Yell! okay don't like scream at someone when rapping but speak up unless you're doing mumbling rapping(which I wouldn't recommend) speak up so people can hear what you're saying cause what's the point of rapping if people can't understand what you're saying

☽ Try freestyling. Freestyling is essential when becoming a rapper. Practicing freestyling can expand your words choice, how fast you can rap, and making sense of your raps.

☽  Do some mouth exercises like doing mouth twisters

☽ When rapping try smiling, this way you use your full jaw to enunciate your words better

☽ Put emotion in your rapping so your audience can connect with it and make them remember hey this person is a human and I relate to them. Cause no one wants to hear a robot rapping

☽ Try closing your eyes, this way you put more emotion in your rapping

☽ This one may be obvious but practice. practicing will, of course, make you get better

☽ Study some of your favorite rappers, the way how they pronounce words, what kind of tone they have, or how they rap. This way you can find your own rapping style

☽ Learn to memorize your rhymes so that when you're on stage you won't need a piece paper on stage

☽ When writing raps, write about what's happing in life and things that are happing or write about situations that happen to you or problems that are happing in life

☽  In the show "Wild n Out", there a game called "Bull Spittin" Basically a person goes one of those bull things you on at a carnival and they are given a word and then they have to freestyle using that word. My method is to mute the video and when the world comes to start freestyling. You can also just use a word generator on online

Here are some tutorials for things that rappers do in songs you often hear

Trills

Trills are basically rolling your R's. An iconic trill is Lisa's in BOOMBAYAH

Also, I forgot that rolling your R's are also used when speaking Spanish so learning to trill your R's is a plus!

Freestyling
