Annabeth missed him. She missed everything about him, from his messy black hair and his shimmering green eyes to his troublemaker smile. She even missed the way that he would carry her around the apartment, upside down, not setting her down until she confessed her undying love for him.

She missed him even more now that she was going to be the mother of his child.

But her loving fiancé had just left to travel to Afghanistan, no more than 83 days before. Annabeth had no contact with Percy except for the letters he had been writing for her at the start of each month.

The young couple wasn't doing well financially, especially after moving into an apartment in New York City. Percy had gotten an offer from an officer down over in Afghanistan and he had to take it. Annabeth still remembered the day he told her he was leaving.

Percy sat up, covering Annabeth's bare body with the linen sheet. "Annabeth, darling, I need to tell you something."

"Yes, Percy?" she answered tiredly.

"I'm leaving soon."

Annabeth's lip wobbled. "You're breaking up with me? But...you just proposed. We were getting married, Percy!"

"No, sweetie, I'm not leaving you. I'm leaving New York."

"W-what? Am I coming?"

He shook his head, reaching over to brush a curl from her face. She leaned into his hand.

"An officer in Afghanistan contacted me, Officer Mars. They want me in the war, and when it's finished they'll help us financially. I've been thinking, and I have to take it."

"Percy, you accepted this without even consulting me?" she asked, now both upset and furious.

"I had to. You would have convinced me not to go."

"Of course I would. I love you! We could have figured this out together! What if you get yourself killed out there?"

Percy reached for her hands, but Annabeth recoiled. She yanked the sheets off of the bed and covered herself completely, jumping off of the bed. Percy stood up too. Annabeth threw his boxers at him.

"Get dressed and talk to me. Why are you leaving?"

He slid his underwear on and stared sadly at his girlfriend, his fiancé, his love. "I already told you, sweetheart. I know that we've been struggling financially. You love your job and our home, and I couldn't ask you to trade them for anything. I have to make this sacrifice, Annabeth."

I know times are gettin' hard

But just believe me, girl

Someday I'll pay the bills with this guitar

We'll have it good
