LUCAS

Great. Just fucking great

I sit back on the sofa, trying to ignore the thumping of my heart because I didn't think things would happen so quickly. I told Simmons I'd meet with his boss only if he let me see my mother, and surprisingly, he agreed rather quickly.

"Where am I going to meet him?"

"We are going to meet him at an address that he'll send in tonight. Don't worry. You have a full day to get it together."

I nod, running a hand through my hair. I'm fucking exhausted and Ray hasn't been able to gather much information for me on the Damico's. Something tells me that we're all going to end up rather hurt with this situation and with every second that passes, I'm unsure of what to do.

Melissa walks downstairs, her blonde hair up in a messy bun. She smiles, waving at both Simmons and I somewhat shyly and then makes her way to the kitchen.

"She's still staying here?" Simmons asks once she's gone.

I shrug. "She doesn't feel comfortable being alone."

It's not a total lie. Truth be told, I'm not comfortable with her being alone, not with everything going on. At least if she's under the same roof as me I know she's okay.

"Must be awkward for Adeleine." Simmons' comment makes my eyebrow arch for a couple of reasons. Number one: I hadn't thought about that and number two: why the hell does he care?

I keep the conversation with Simmons short from then on, agreeing to see him later that night and for a few minutes I am left alone with my thoughts.

Things have changed between Adeleine and I, and I'm sure she has noticed too. She doesn't leave the room as often, and though I thought it was because she's tired, maybe it's because she does feel uncomfortable with Melissa being here.

"I'm going to get in the shower and then I'll make some dinner," Melissa says, bringing me out of my thoughts. I nod, not saying anything as she walks upstairs once again and don't move until I hear the door shutting behind her.

I consider what I should do for a few minutes and finally, decide that the only way Addie and I will avoid yet another misunderstanding, is if we talk.

I knock on her door and wait for her to tell me to come in before I enter her room. She's laying in bed, paler than I have seen her before. She looks tired.

"Are you okay?"

She nods, clearing her throat and sitting up. "I'm fine. Is everything okay?"

I frown. She doesn't seem like herself. "Are you sure, Addie? Are you sick?"

With a small smile, she replies, "No, just tired. What's up?"

I narrow my eyes at her, not fully believing what she says. Something is definitely wrong.
