chapter three !
summer days, drifting awaySUNNY WEATHER BROUGHT the Cullens inside for the whole day. Or at least, they didn't have to go to school. Sunny days were Carolyn's favourite; Carlisle allowed them to stay at the Cullen house in order to avoid revealing themselves, so the immortal teenagers had all day to whatever they wished. Edward typically spent his time reading in his room listening to Debussy, Alice liked to clean if there was occasion for it, but if there wasn't she would spend the day sorting out her closet. Rose liked to read as well, but preferred to do it outside, where the sun could hit her and her skin would glimmer. Jasper and Emmett usually spend the day trying to beat each other at various video games. Carolyn liked to paint. Carlisle and Esme just liked to spend the time together, most likely watching some movie while cuddling.
Today was different, though. Casually, last night Emmett mentioned that he was a better hunter than Jasper and Carolyn. It naturally sent off the two siblings, who were both highly competitive, especially when it came to showing Emmett up on something stupid he said. So, that's what led to the Cullen clan being outside at approximately 9:23 in the morning, watching as Carolyn, Jasper and Emmett took their positions at the edge of the woods. The goal was to take down as many animals as possible in fifteen minutes, the bigger the anymore, the higher the score.
At 9:25 a.m., Alice proclaimed it was time to start, and the three adopted siblings took off into the woods. Carolyn ran as fast as she could until she caught the scent of a deer. She ran at it, and bit into its neck, quickly killing it. She left it there, and began to search the immediate area for anymore animals. Carolyn found two mountain lions, three bunnies and another three deer. She hauled her kills back to the house, where she saw Jasper waiting with two rabbits and four deer. They waited for Emmett to come back, and when he did, all he carried with him was a medium sized black bear.
Long story short, Carolyn won. It was something her and Jasper would never let Emmett forget, especially since as he was five minutes late to the dead line, he was disqualified. Who knew being punctual had its benefits?
The rest of the day past with no trouble, aside from the odd yell of triumph from Jasper or Emmett as one of them won at whatever game they were playing. Carolyn spent the day in her room, which was located next to Edward's and had a great view of the woods. She faced the wall of windows, with her canvas and paints in front of her. Her palette was full of greens and blues and yellows, all ready to be used in her latest painting. She wore her painting clothes, a pair of blue overalls all ready covered in paint, and had her hair up in a messy bun. From what she could remember, as a human she had loved art, but never took up the profession as her father disapproved.
Carolyn's room was messy. She had her red chaise lounger on one side of the room, and a tall set of bookshelves set to one side of the walls. She had a few of her previous paintings set up on the walls; a family portrait of the Cullens that she had done in the seventies, a painting of a red telephone box from London, and one of her human brother. Well, she thought it was him. Vampires lost a lot of their memories from their human lives, but Carolyn remembered Charles-George very well. There was a stack of painting against the other wall, ones that she hadn't gotten around to selling yet. Paint containers littered the floor, and so did paint brushes. She knew she had to clean soon, but couldn't really be bothered.
Carolyn spent the next few hours painting the scene before her. She carefully painted the tall trees, and the sun poking through the tops of their branches and the vibrant blue sky. It was times like these that she was thankful she lived in Forks. Nature was always such a good muse, and she had gotten sick of painting her siblings over and over again throughout the years.•
MIKE KNEW THAT she wasn't going to be at school that day. Dr. Cullen always took his kids out of school on nice days to go hiking or some shit, so Carolyn was obviously absent on one of the nicest days of the school year. Mike was bitter about it, though. He never got to see her in the sunlight; he never got to see how her hair would shine in the sunny rays, or how her skin would glow and her eyes would sparkle. He would bet all his money that she was the most beautiful thing on the planet. He just wished she shared the same passion as him.
When the Cullens first arrived in Forks two years ago, everyone was infatuated with them. They were a family from out of town, which was enough to get the people of Forks interested, and additionally they were all insanely attractive. Carolyn and Rosalie looked like super models, with their long legs and beautiful blonde locks, while Alice looked like a fairy straight from out of children's tale. Mike had to admit that even the boys were good looking. Emmett looked like he could easily crush all the boys in Forks High into nothing more than powder, and looked like a professional wrestler. Jasper, despite the constant look of discomfort that was always present on his face, was classically handsome, with his rich golden hair and well defined build. And Edward, well Edward was just the envy of every boy in school.
However, they were awfully suspicious. Everyone in town thought so; they were all terribly pale, and shared the same eye colour despite having no biological connection (aside from Mrs. Cullen and Jasper and Rosalie, but Mike didn't think they would share that many similarities). Jessica also always made sure everyone knew how weird it was that Rosalie and Emmett, and Alice and Jasper, were romantically involved. Admittedly, it was all a bit odd. And as for Carolyn, well she always said the right things, and for some reason everyone always went along with what she says. She was strange, but she was a mystery. One that Mike wanted to unravel.
That day when they stumbled across each other in the woods was probably the best moment of his life. Or it was at least in the top three. Mike didn't stop smiling all night, and in all honesty, his parents were sort of concerned. It was that night that Mike decided that no matter what, he was going to figure out Carolyn Cullen. Even if it killed him.WORD COUNT: 1168
