Chapter 9 – The Birds and the Sea

‘When the magician asked me what form I would give this magical love letter, within a second, I already knew what I wanted to answer him. A lotus flower. The seed of a lotus flower undergoes germination for as long as a thousand years. It’s comparable to your divine beauty: timeless.’ – Love, Jonah

That’s what the love letter had said. Or should I say, what the fake love letter had deceived me with. I believed those words at first. Not in the least bit aware that it was nothing but part of a conspiracy that had successfully led to my capture. That’s what I get for being such a gullible woman. I should have listened to Lena. I was never fond of regretting.

Regret, for me, was a present action that involves torturing yourself with the past. But so far, ever since I met Jonah, I’ve been doing it so frequently that I can barely keep track of how many times I’ve done it for the night.

And the fact that he compared me to a lotus flower was a nice coincidence. In my ever so dysfunctional brain, that was a good sign. Jonah had shed light on why my father had used a lotus flower to describe me. That played my heartstrings right. Because of this one unfortunate liar, I doubt I’ll be able to trust anything with a penis anytime soon. My father is the only exception of course. Now that I agreed to go with my captors willingly in exchange for not harming my parents, the only problem left was convincing my parents to let me go.

“There is no way in hell you are leaving with them, Nushka. No way. Do you get that? It will be over my dead body.” My mother snarled at me as she stood herself upright.

“Of course, I agree with your mother.” My father simply said as he brought his sword to an offensive stance once again.

“I have no time to be witnessing this touching family moment. So, cursed woman, let us go.” Aries added, thoroughly annoyed.

“In case you missed it, snob, my parents will not let me go that easily.” I informed her. “And if you harm a single strand of hair on their head, you will pay for it. Or more appropriately, your lovely Jonah will pay for it with his life.” I threatened her. Somehow, Jonah is this imbecile’s weakness, proven right once again as I watched her flinch from my threat. I am starting to think that they are indeed lovers. I felt another pang on my chest at the thought. There is nothing else I can do but get used to this pangs of jealousy until it is no more.

Time heals everything, my mother always told me. Hopefully, time will help heal my damaged brain.

“Fine, I’ll take care of it.” Aries muttered under her breath.

“You are killing yourself Aries.” Jonah suddenly said with concern evident in his voice.

“Never mind that, I’m already dying, remember?” Aries responded, with a solemn smile on her face, it took me by surprise as it was something that I have never expected to see on her. I brought my weapon to Jonah’s neck, to warn Aries that if she makes a wrong move, her sweet lover will die.

Now I’m starting to wonder why Jonah doesn’t bother fighting for himself. His eyes remain glued on Aries even in the face of death. I guess I’d just have to add that to my why-Jonah-is-worthless list, to help me forget this thumping heart that is now going bonkers with the almost nonexistent distance between me and him. I am officially warped.

Aries began dancing her demented dance once again, her white dress swayed with the weird movements of her body. As if on cue, my parents slowly slumped to the ground, unconscious.

“What the heck did you do?” I asked, panicked. Before I could press the blade deeper into Jonah’s neck, surprisingly, Jonah spoke up. Talking to me directly, which I noticed he had avoided ever since his traitorous traits were made known to me.
