Chapter 7 – A Not So Magical Love Letter
“So, where are my parents?” I asked Lena. I was starting to worry for their safety. Not that I doubt that they will have difficulties defending themselves, but still, they are considered handicapped against maybe a dozen guards and a priestess. But who knows? Maybe I am underestimating my parents. I bet they would go rabid and fight off Lucifer himself with nothing but their bare hands if they ever find themselves in hell without me. I can almost imagine Helga trying to pull out Lucifer’s horns; I shuddered at the mental image.
“I told Helga to meet us at the city gates. Hopefully, we would escape the city undetected by them, which is quite frankly, Nushka, very unlikely. But a teeny tiny amount of optimism won’t kill us in this situation.” Lena answered me as we walked briskly to the direction of the city gates. I wanted to enquire about the weird connection between Helga and Lena that enabled them to communicate with each other, but I decided that it would do me no good, since they were avoiding the topic like a plague.
Lena had torn off a part of her silk gown for me to use as a head cloth, hiding my hair, as she told me my hair was too conspicuous. And I couldn’t agree with her more. With my hair undone, I stood out like a sore thumb in the crowd, with the brightest striking blonde hair anyone would ever see. We were stopping ourselves from sprinting to the gates as it would seem highly suspicious if we began running. We needed to blend in perfectly in the crowd.
Lena had begun chanting under her breath once again, making use of her powers, she thought I would miss her voice being drowned by the conversations between people in the crowd. Of course, she thought wrong. Divination or whatever she was doing, she was still killing herself. Now I am genuinely curious as to what Lena cannot do, because so far, she seemed to have the ability to do everything. From building a barrier around the city, creating an illusion that was the carbon copy of her, what else has she not done yet?
On second thought, I’d rather remain ignorant to the depth of her aptitudes. I’d prefer tying a cloth around her mouth to prevent her from chanting. Of course, it would be ineffective too, since she had located my parents without the need to chant, all the while maintaining the illusion of her image for people to see. I swear, one day, I will find a way to fully hinder her ability of using her life force. Hopefully, she lives long enough for me to be able to achieve that.
Within a second, I could feel cold tingly sensations creeping on my skin. I don’t know how I found out, but I knew that Lena was shielding me, or making me invisible. My assumptions were proven when a person walked through me. Lena was ghosting me, making me without a corporeal form, yet I was still there walking with her. And from the amused giggles I heard from her, she was the only one who could see me, and she was finding it hilarious that a person merely walked through me.
“You know, Lena. You are as stubborn as a mule, one that will soon drop dead. It’s unfair. You’re treating your life force as if it is something that can be replenished, as if it is of little value to you. I’m reminding you, once you run out of it; you’d be buried six feet under with me standing above your grave mourning my heart out and blaming myself for your death.” I pointed out to her, not caring in the least if it makes her feel bad.
“At least I would rest in peace with the knowledge that I used my life force on something I will not regret. I will die a happy woman. You just have to think that I died happy, and it will help you sleep better at night.” She retorted. Knowing fully well that my arguments were garbled, I decided to change the topic. Conversation helped put off the looming disaster that was soon to come our way. Since we couldn’t rush, it was better to talk than die thinking of what is to happen once we reach the city gates.
