It took a lot for Artemis to go to sleep. She would stay up studying or a million thoughts and nightmares took control of her dreams. And when she moved into her new apartment, the constant noise of sirens, gunshots, trains, and drunks kept her awake. For once in her life she just wanted to fall asleep to birds.
But one thing that helped her sleep was Dick. His help started way before they even became an item. When she slept in the cave, he seemed to the only one that could hear her scream or cry after a night terror. He would come into her room and hold her. Most times they would walk to the kitchen and they would drink tea together. As they got older it turned into coffee.
When they started to date, he would force her to sleep. Dick would slam her textbooks shut and carry her to bed. Then he would cuddle her into dream world. Artemis would fight him on it, of course. But the bird would always bring up that time where she passed out due to exhaustion. It happened during a mission, too. She almost sent him into cardiac arrest that day.
Today was a bad day in particular. The archer had been nonstop studying for the past few weeks. Finals had just finished and she was dead set on excellent grades. And missions seemed to be coming one after the other. The exhaustion hit Artemis like a truck. She was barely able to keep her eyes open.
"You alright?" Dick asked as he looked down at the blonde. They were on his hammock. He had a small house in one of nicer parts of Blüdhaven, which meant he had a small backyard. Artemis still lived in Gotham, however. Somehow she moved to an even more dangerous neighborhood. Dick didn't even know that was possible.
"I'm fine," Artemis murmured against his chest. She could hear his heartbeat and it was lulling her to sleep. It was a sound she could never get sick of.
The brunet chuckled when he noticed her eyes kept closing and opening, "You're sleepy."
"No I'm not, silly goose!" She reached up and lazily poked the tip of his nose. He chuckled again as he wrapped one hand around her wrist. He held her palm to his heart. Her mind immediately started to count the beat.
"You're delirious, princess. Go to sleep."
"Even though you're right, screw your beautiful self," Artemis huffed as she let herself close her eyes. Dick laughed once more. She could feel it more than she could hear it, though.
Dick shifted a little bit so he could place one foot on the ground. He gently began to rock the hammock. The hand that wasn't around her wrist was holding her head. The combination of his heart, the rocking, and him cradling her sent her off the dream land in matter of minutes.
"Sweet dreams, princess."
