"The people at work threw me a baby shower. The problem is my baby is an adopted fourteen year old," Artemis said as placed a dozen pink bags on their dining room table. Her boyfriend looked up from his laptop and raised an eyebrow. Terra looked up from her school textbook, equally as confused.
"How did that happen?" Dick asked. He pulled one of the baby shower bags closer to him and pulled out a duck onesie meant for a newborn.
"My nosy partner went through the notifications on my phone and read a text M'gann sent me. It said 'Congrats on being a mom,' and now they think I'm pregnant. The reminder for Terra's doctor appointment popped up while he was snooping, too. So now I have Friday off to have an imaginary ultrasound!" The oldest blonde threw her hands in the air. In frustration, she brought them down to yank at her hair.
Terra started to pull items out of the bags, "Diaper wipes? Mother of god."
"Mommy's breast friend ... I just want to know who comes up with the names for this stuff," Dick held up a breast pump, "Cause this is down right messed up."
Artemis rolled her eyes as she took out a pair of baby shoes.
They were white flats that came with frilly white socks. Terra pulled out the rest of the set. The last part was a pink sundress with little lambs on them. If Artemis was having a baby, she definitely would have found it cute. Except for those frilly socks. Those were awful.Terra placed the dress back in the bag, "I'm flattered, but I am no infant."
"Babe, did you tell them you weren't pregnant?" Dick asked as he continued to pull out the gifts. This time he retrieved a rattle blanket with a elephant on it. The brunet smiled at it before placing it on the table.
"I tried, but they didn't believe me. Remember when I was drugged by Count Vertigo?" Both Terra and Dick shuttered at the memory. During that time, there wasn't a moment where Artemis hadn't thrown up. Dick had to move her into the bathroom, where they practically lived in for the two weeks that the poisoning lasted. "They we're convinced it was morning sickness."
"Wait, do they think I'm the dad? No offense, but I can't handle the responsibility of an imaginary baby right now. Plus, we only started dating six months ago. That's moving way too fast," Dick placed his hands up in defense. Artemis glared at him.
"If you ever get me pregnant-
- What are we going to do with this stuff?" Terra interrupted. "I am not a baby and you two are not having one anytime soon."
Artemis furrowed her brows, deep in thought. Someone they knew
had to be pregnant. Dinah was pregnant, but with a boy. M'gann and Connor were trying, but who knew if they would be having a girl. Stephanie was also pregnant. No one knew the gender, however. Then Artemis remembered Violet's friend, Harper. She was pregnant with a girl and due in a few months. And like Artemis growing up, she was poor and could really use all of the baby items, "Harper's pregnant with a girl. I don't know her, but from what M'gann's told me, she's really poor. We can give her the gifts.""But isn't that regifting?" The acrobat raised an eyebrow.
"The Markovian Royal family used to regift expensive jewelry all the time. No one ever had a problem with it," Terra shrugged, "And we have no use for all these baby clothes. I am sure it will be much appreciated."
"Two against one, Dick," Artemis said as she stretched her back, "I'll call M'gann tomorrow and ask her to drop off
the baby things to Harper.""But can we keep this one?" Dick asked his girlfriend as he held up the elephant rattle. "When we do have an actual baby, him or her can have it. And we can also tell them the funny story behind it."
Terra nodded in agreement, "It's a souvenir," Artemis rolled her grey eyes as she threw an arm around her adopted daughter. Terra smiled at her guardian,"Two against one, Artemis."
The older blonde scoffed, "You're right. I guess we can keep it."
"Yes!" The two cheered.
Saving the elephant rattle turned out to be a great idea when Artemis gave birth to Wesley John Grayson only two years later.
