Lynda's Point Of View:
Sam, Charlie and I sat next to each other during lunchtime and talked about what it would be like if we were actually firefighters or doctors.
Soon I was called into Mrs. Smith's office.
I stood up from my seat and headed for Mrs. Smith's office.
As I walked down the hallway, I wondered what possible thing have I done wrong.
I got to the door and my heart was racing.
I opened the door and Mrs. Smith was sitting at her desk, smiling.
Interesting, Mrs. Smith never smiled before.
"Sit down down, child," she told me cheerfully.
I did what she told me to do and waited for her to talk to me.
She looked at me and said, "Lynda, I have found a family that is willing to add you to their family."
My eyes grew wide.
"They're adopting me?" I asked.
"Yes," Mrs. Smith replied. "You will be leaving the next morning. Off you go now."
I stood up and exited her office.
I'm going to get adopted? But why? I have already made a new friend. A REAL friend. What will I tell him?
*The next morning
I put my clothes in my suitcase and I held my jacket close.
Today is the day that I'm leaving the orphanage with a family.
I put a piece of paper in my skirt pocket. It is a drawing of me and Sam. I hope that one day we will meet each other.
I went out of my room and sat on my suitcase.
Then I heard footsteps. It was closer and closer. It was Sam!
"Sam!" I exclaimed, feeling scared.
Sam turned around and walked over.
"Yeah Lynda?" Sam asked as he sat next to me.
"I should have told you something earlier," I began as I held my jacket closer to me, "I'm leaving the orphanage and going to a new family."
I sobbed and Sam patted my back.
"The problem is that I'm scared!" I cried, thinking that Sam might not understand me.
Sam put his hand over my mouth.
"Shhh," he shushed, "don't scream or you'll wake up the others."
Put yourself together, Lynda, you can tell him.
I calmed down and continued, "I'm scared of leaving you and Charlie."
He looked at me if I was joking.
"Why are you scared of that?" Sam asked being very confused. "We just met yesterday."
"Because you're the first friend I've ever had in my entire life," I replied, "I'm your first friend in this orphanage. If I leave you, then you won't have any more friends."
Sam said, "I'll always have my brother, Charlie, with me."
"But I still don't wanna leave," I sighed, thinking how awesome Sam was to me when we first met. "You are not like other kids."
"I'm not?" Sam asked.
"No," I replied, "when we were playing emergencies together, I had a feeling that we'll help save other lives and be heroes of the world...together."
It is true. I really had that feeling.
"Really?" Sam asked. "Well, I don't even plan to be a hero at all."
"I understand," I replied, "you don't have to do big things to be a hero. You can do little things too, even if you don't plan it that way."
"Really?" Sam replied. "I never knew that."
"My mother once told me before she..." I began to tear up as I remembered how she would tell me inspirations from people she knew.
"Before she left you?" Sam inquired.
I looked at him with wet tears.r
"No," I whimpered. "Before she died."
"Oh," Sam whispered, "I'm sorry."
There was a silent pause. Then Sam looked at Lincoln and smiled. He put Lincoln in my lap and I was confused.
Why is he giving me his lion, Lincoln?
"Sam?" I asked. "What are you doing?"
"Since you'll miss me," Sam began, "You can have my lion, Lincoln, to remember me."
I wiped my tears and said, "Thank you."
The drawing! I should give it to him!
I reached for my skirt pocket and pulled out the drawing. I smiled as I handed the paper to Sam's hand. Sam opened the piece of paper and smiled. It was a picture of Sam and me standing on top of the world, wearing a red cape around our necks and had a huge smile on our faces.
Sam hugged me and I hugged Sam. Then footsteps were heard.
Oh no! That's Mrs. Smith! Sam will be in so much trouble!
"O-oh," I said and sprang up on my feet and pulled Sam up.
"Sam you need to go back to your room," I whispered.
"What? Why?" Sam inquired as I pushed him towards his room.
"Because if Mrs. Smith finds you, you'll be in big trouble," I explained, "go to your room!"
Sam ran to his room and shut the door, quietly.
Mrs. Smith found me and said, "Lynda, are you ready to meet your family? The Crosswires?"
"Yes, ma'am," I quietly replied as I grabbed my stuff and walked through the hallway with Mrs. Smith.
At the enterance, there was a couple smiling at me and they gave me a warm greeting.
"Welcome to the family," the woman said.
"We're you're parents," the man added.
"Nice to meet you both," I replied cheerfully.
"Come on, Lynda," the man said as he grabbed my suitcase and exited the orphanage.
"Okay," I replied as my "mom" held my hand.
I looked back at Mrs. Smith and said to her goodbye.
I'll miss you, Sam. Goodbye.
