The Arrival

I watched two raindrops race down the car window attempting to occupy my brain from the long journey ahead of us. We have been in the car for the past 5 hours but it felt like forever. My brother Christian had fallen to sleep within the first half hour of the ride and I envied his ability to do so anywhere. Once he fell asleep standing up in the subway, which I found hilarious, but my parents weren't as pleased when he ended up missing his job interview.

On the other hand, ever since we were young he outshined me in everything. If I was good at skiing he was better, if I liked swimming he swam faster. Even in the looks department he overshadowed me. His green eyes paired with his dark hair and chiseled jawline made every girl fall for him, whereas going into my senior year of high school, I've never even had a boyfriend. An awkward array of freckles extended over my nose and onto my check bones, whilst my long black hair tumbled over my shoulders and as the humidity of the air rose so did my hair. My curvy frame, although I was far from fat, provided extra anxiety when it came to thinking about the toned, skinny girls that flooded my last school in Denver, Canada.

For as long as I can remember I have never had a place I could call home. My mom being a Cognitive Behavioral therapist and my dad an international corporate lawyer has forced us to move around wherever their jobs took us. We never got the chance to settle down and create our life, but that never really bothered me as much as it did my brother.

As we were slowly approaching our arrival in Aspen, Colorado I could hear my parents' voices fade out in the back of my mind and I finally began to fall asleep.

...................

I was startled awake by the sound of my brother playing AC/DC through the car stereo completely oblivious to the fact that I had been sleeping.

"What the hell are you doing," I said as I slowly stretched open my eyes, seeing Christian pound his hands down like drumsticks of the back of my mom's chair. "I'd finally fallen asleep."

"Oh please you've been asleep for the past 4 hours, and I thought there is no better way to wake up to a little Black In Black," he replied as a smile stretched across his face from ear to ear. He knew I hated his music and on any other occasion I would have yelled at him but I was too tired to make a scene and turned to face the window.

As the hours passed and the day faded into night it became more real to me that we might actually arrive in Aspen. When my brother's rave was over we were only an hour outside our destination in Glenn Hills.

"Are you ready to see our new house," my mom asked as she reached her eyes around to the back seat. As she turned I gave her her a smile and a quick nod, but Christian just rolled his eyes,

"Couldn't be happier." he groaned in his most sarcastic voice.

"You be nice to your mother, this is not her fault. If you want to blame someone, blame me because it's my jobs that brought us down here." my dad said with a stern voice.

"And next time it will be mom," he mumbled under his breath so only I could hear it.

The rest of the car ride passed in complete silence and I wasted the rest of the time by watching out the window trying to spot license plates from different states, while Chris had fallen asleep once again.

We had always lived in victorian style homes because my parents loved the history behind them, so when pulled up into the drive way of a 8,000 square foot vila, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. In the front of the house was a beautiful window that displayed a winding staircase that split off into two different directions. To the left of the window sat the front door that was incased in a mahogany archway.

"Woah," I said a little lost for words "how can we afford this?"

"Your dad and I decided it might be best to try something new, something that you two might appreciate a little more and don't worry about the cost your dads company helping us out."

I looked over at Chris who had not said anything since the arrival, but I could tell by the look on his face that he was just as shocked as I was, maybe even a little more.

"I CALL DIBS ON THE BIGGEST ROOM." he finally screamed running to the door.

"NO WAY!" I replied trying to catch up to him, but by the time I reached the door he was already out of sight.

After touring the house and long arguments about who gets what room, we began to unload the few things we brought with us in the car: a few outfits for each of us, some boxes of books, movies, and other essential items. Within 30 minutes we had unpacked everything but the rest of our things were not going to arrive till next week, so that meant mattresses and fast food for the time being.

"Mimi, do you want to come get ice cream?" Chris asked as he appeared in the doorway of my room, his nickname for me since I was little. "Mom told me I have to ask you."

"Ok, thanks I would love to, just give me a minute."

When I got in the car I could tell he was frustrated about having to drive our parents Car. Before we left he had asked them if he could drive up in his new white Audi convertible, but they denied his request with no hesitation. So he had to wait for it to be shipped up with the rest of our stuff.

"Do you know where we are going?" I said trying to break the silence that had filled the car

"No, but I looked up and there is a small town not to far from here, so they have to have ice cream,"

"That makes me feel a lot better."

As we reached town there was an overwhelming amount of people that flooded the streets. It was about 10 minutes before we found the ice cream store and as we pulled into the parking lot it became very visible to how long the line was. When we got up to the front of the line it felt like everybody's eyes where on us.

"What can I get you," a girl said as she leaned over the counter

"Just a small chocolate cone," I replied but I could tell she was not interested in what I was saying, as my brother leaned his elbows on the counter" I am going to wait in the car, can your bring it out to me?"

Chris gave a quick nod in response and returned to his conversation with the counter girl who was now not even trying to hide the fact she was flirting with him.

I exited the store dying to get out of these crowds and back into the car but as I turned the corner, a guy about the same age as me slammed into with his vanilla milkshake.

"HOLY SHIT, WHAT THE HELL," I screamed realizing that I was now covered in his milkshake from head to toe.

"Oh my god, I am so sorry, I didn't see you."

As I looked up I was actually taken back by how handsome he was. His blond hair swept across his forehead in small curls, which were complemented nicely by his blue eyes and perfect teeth. He wore a big white sweatshirt which was also now covered in ice cream, paired with jeans and tan Tims. I could hear his friends laughing in the background which made me feel even more embarrassed, but he must have noticed my face turning bright red because he flicked his head around and gave them a quick glare that seemed to shut them up before he turned his attention back to me.

"Don't worry about it hated this jacket away," I lied just trying to get out of this conversation, as I began walking away

"I'm Griffin by the way, but my friends call me Griff."

"Good to know."

"Are you going to tell me yours?"

"No," I said ending the conversation. As I turned back to the car I saw Chris watching me.

"Who is that?" he said with glaring eyes.

"Just a guy that spilled a milk shake on me."

"Well your are not getting in the car like that, go throw your jacket out."

I did as he said and got in the car, Griff still on my mind. The rest of the way back I didn't say a single word, distracted by a certain blond haired and blue eyed boy who just covered me in his milkshake.
