After days of searching, Nick finally found a place that was willing to give her a job interview. Although that didn't guarantee anything, Nick could help but feel elated. Most teens her age would dread having to get a job but not her. She'd been working since she was old enough.
By the age of twelve she'd gotten a saturday job babysitting the kids across the street or mowing someone's lawn. She'd do whatever odd jobs were going, got a little bit of cash. Now she was old enough to work a proper job, she was going to take advantage of that. It was true she already had a weekend job at the supermarket down the road, "Bradley's Big Buy". And now she found herself outside another convenience store, "Melvad's General Store".
She'd been prompted to find another job after the move. Her mother proved that just because they'd been given a fresh start in a new country, she wasn't going to change and get herself a job. The only reason they could fund moving from England to America was with the money she'd gotten from divorcing George's father. Now it was up to Nick to make sure they could keep living there. And to do that she'd need to start earning more.
She'd already spoken to her boss at Bradley's to ask about working a few shifts after school but they wouldn't take her on. They claimed they already had too many school kids working those shifts and not enough during the day.
It wasn't out of the question to work during school times, at least, it wasn't a problem for Nick. Her boss thought differently. He had warned her to stay in school or she'd end up like him, working in a supermarket for the rest of his life. But, truth be told, Nick already expected to end up like him. Her family needed money and she was going to provide it. If that meant working her butt off instead of going to college, so be it.
Melvad's General Store was a lot smaller than Bradley's. Nick could only see two people who worked there, one was a woman on the tills and the other was a tall, thin aging man with a tag on that read "manager".
"Excuse me," Nick began, approaching the elderly looking man. She was clutching the newspaper cutting where she'd circled their job ad, "I'm here about the ad." She explained, showing him in the paper incase he'd forgotten about it. That had happened to her before. She'd go down to a store that was advertising it was hiring only to be told that they'd meant to cancel it and they weren't actually hiring at all.
"Yes, good." He stammered, "Can I direct you to talk to Joyce, I'm a little busy here." He rambled, placing a hand on Nick's shoulder and herding her towards the woman on the till like a sheep. She looked bored as she rested one arm on the conveyor belt to prop up her head. There were no customers in there. Just Nick, the manager and the woman.
"Joyce," he called out. The woman jumped, snapping her eyes wide open. Had she been asleep? "This is-" He continued but stopped abruptly as he realised he hadn't asked for her name.
"Nick." Nick replied and the manager clapped his hands together.
"This is Nick. She's here about the job. I've got an import stock check to do so I'll just leave her with you." He instructed and the woman, Joyce nodded with a smile on her face that didn't quite reach her tired eyes.
