Eli drove down a busy street, keeping his eyes open for anything that seemed out of the ordinary. There was a stolen police radio playing on loop in his car as he circled the city for the millionth time that night. It was 8 in the morning and he was exhausted. There just was no way that he could rest without knowing that she was safe and home. "Why weren't you there? You knew that she'd be a target for all the weirdos in the city. Daughter of the fucking Joker." He scolded himself, tears stinging his eyes at the thought of what she might be going through at that very moment. The worst possible scenarios invaded his mind. He had to get to her as quickly as possible.
The sound of his phone ringing broke him from his thoughts. "It's gotta be her..." He hoped, picking up the device only to read 'Dad' on the caller ID. "Hello?" Eli tried to keep his voice from wavering, but his fear was growing. "Where are you? I told you to stay put at the station. We're handling this." His father's voice boomed with authority, though he could tell it was laced with concern. "I can't just sit there and do nothing, Dad! This is my fault after all. If she dies and I could've done something to prevent it but didn't-" He swallowed harshly. "Well, I don't know what I would do." Officer Pickett went to object but Eli simply continued. "I'm going to find her." *beep*
As soon as he tossed his phone in the passenger seat, the radio crackled in. "We have reports of a woman screaming at the old Arkham Asylum building. Caution is advised as no more information is given." "Of-fucking-course." Eli cursed under his breath for not thinking of the obvious and spun around in an illegal U-turn. He could hear sirens in the distance as the police joined in the chase. Still, Eli managed to pull into the building moments after his father.
Stepping out of his car, Officer Pickett eyed his son and the radio he could see through the opened door. "We'll talk about this later." He spoke with a scowl before pulling a megaphone out of his vehicle. He waited until his backup had arrived and they had the place surrounded before even turning it on. "This is the Gotham City Police. You are surrounded. Come out with your hands up." There was a moment of silence, without response, before he attempted again. "I repeat-" "Wait, Dad, Look!" Eli pointed to a balcony about two stories high. Aidan stepped out with his arms outstretched. "Well, isn't this a pleasant surprise! Such a big turnout for my debut. What a crowd!" He bowed before chuckling abhorrently.
"Come down and let's have a chat. I'm sure you wanna tell your story." Officer Pickett spoke calmly in contrast to Aidan's sporadic nature. "Oh I don't think so. You see, I know a trap when I see one. You give yourself away. I come down peacefully and you would just lock me away like you do with everyone else with a personality around here. I mean, Just look at what you did to poor Mary, that is who I assume you're here for." Eli gritted his teeth at the mention of her. "Fucking bastard!" He shouted, though his voice barely carried past the first story. "You actually had her believing that she was just another boring person destined to fit in and behave with your quaint little society." Aidan wagged his finger as he mimicked the authoritative police officers below him. "Send the hostage out safely and we can discuss any terms you would see fit, instead." Pickett offered. "Oh, you can have her, honestly." He reached back into the room and pulled Mary into view. She was soaked in sweat, had a cloth tied around her mouth, and was bound at the wrists. Her darkened veins were hidden under her clothing, though she visibly held a gloomy air to her that hadn't been there before. Eli could see, even from that distance, the pain her tear stained face held. "My work here is done, anyway." Aidan's laughter became uncontrollable as he pushed Mary over the railing.
Her screams mixed with Eli's as he ran in some sort of an attempt to catch her before she hit the ground. Of course,he knew it was no use. She landed within a bush at the base of the building, somewhat softening her fall. The rest of the police force stormed the building at the signal as Pickett and Eli rushed to her side. "Mary, You're okay. It's gonna be okay." Eli spoke, caressing her head without knowing for sure if his words were the truth. He so desperately hoped that they would be. "Eli." She smiled, using the last bit of consciousness she possessed to squeeze his hand. She hoped, as she faded in and out, that she wasn't going to die here. But, she thought, if she did then at least he would be the last thing she got to see. "I'm going to need an ambulance at the old Arkham building ASAP." Pickett breathlessly spoke into his radio, starting compressions on Mary.
