I tapped my foot on the floor, anxiously waiting for Ashley to arrive. I knew it was stupid, they still haven't opened the gates yet, but I know Ashley arrives pretty early to school, and I wanted to be the first one she sees, so I can talk to her without her getting distracted.
That one voicemail I sent her, soon enough developed into 3 other ones and 16 text messages. But all this effort to reach out to her was to no avail. She didn't give me a reply or a call back. But I wasn't going to blame her for that, I figured maybe her phone had died.
I looked at the time. 7:04 AM. She should be here pretty soon.
"Is that what you do every morning?" A voice, that seemed to come from behind me, scoffed.
I turned around confused, but as I saw the face that was looking back at me, my facial expression went from confused to disappointed. Landon.
"Ugh...what?" I asked, referring to his statement.
"I mean you were just standing, watching that big tree over there like a creep. Is that what your morning routine looks like?" Landon mocked me, while smirking.
"Have you been staring at me for that long to notice that? Is that what you do every morning? Creep." I retorted back, wiping his smirk away from his stupidly handsome face. Wait wha-
"Damn, no need to be so-"
"Shush, she's here. Can you like...um how to say this nicely...go?" I asked, trying my hardest to be polite while plastering on the best fake smile I could pull.
He said something before leaving, but honestly I didn't even pay any attention to it. My eyes were focused on her as she strides down the parking lot of school, her hair in two perfect french braids.
I took a few hesitant, wobbly but long strides towards her before planting myself in front of her, hands behind my back. My whole body was tense as I stood there awkwardly in front of her, struggling to keep my balance.
Sound natural. Act normal.
"Hey! Ashley!" Instead of sounding natural, my voice came out high pitched, almost like a squeak.
"Hi Emily." She greeted me, sounding bored. She sighed as she put her hands on hip, and said, "How have you been?"
"H-how have I been? You're kidding me right?" I said raising my voice, getting aggravated by her question.
"What?" She asked, taken aback.
"Ashley, what happened to you? To us? You've been ignoring me all this time and I'm sick of it. Why are you doing this?" I yelled, throwing my hands in the air.
"What do you mean? I've just been hanging out with Miles! Is that so wrong? To hang out with my boyfriend? You should be happy for me!" She yelled back, just as angry.
"Getting a boyfriend doesn't equal forgetting about your best friend!" I felt tears forming in the corners of my eyes, as my heart was pounding at full speed.
"And your boyfriend? You wanna know what he thinks of you? He just wants to get into your pants and then dump you! He said you were a pain in the ass and that he was just waiting for a fucking blowj-"
"Shut up! Just shut up! Are you even listening to yourself right now? Miles is a sweet guy and he would never hurt me, he promised!" Ashley spat angrily, making my blood boil.
"He's gonna cheat on you!" I screamed, trying to warn her, but it only made the tears in my eyes unleash as they cascaded down my cheeks.
"You know what I think? I think you're just jealous!" She pointed at me accusingly, her eyes dark.
"I'm not jealous! Ashley, please listen to me, that boy is no good for you. He's just gonna break your heart, I heard him talking with his friends the other day. Please you have to believe me." I pleaded getting desperate.
"I'm not doing this anymore. The last thing I want is your jealous self trying to break Miles and I apart. Go find another relationship to ruin." She grit her teeth angrily as she walked away, making sure to bump her shoulder with mine.
I slumped my shoulders as I silently cried, my tears staining my boots. I bit my bottom lip in an attempt to prevent making any sound, but that didn't work.
I covered my mouth with my hand muting out my choked out sobs, which lead me to closing my eyes and shaking uncontrollably.
I tried to warn her, I really tried. Only if she listened to me. I was scared for her, she was going to get hurt, and I tried my best to prevent that, but she wouldn't listen. Why'd she have to be so stubborn?
"Give it time." A voice that I recognized to be Landon's said.
"Only time can show her the truth at this point." He continued, taking a step forward, towards me.
"H-how l-long have you been listening?" I managed to get out while still sobbing.
"Enough to know that Miles is a horny douche bag and that Ashley is clearly Blinded." He shrugged, pursing his lips.
I nodded my head, looking sadly at the ground.
"Come on, don't mope around like that, I'll buy you lunch to cheer you up." Landon said trying to lighten the mood.
"Why are you being so nice all of a sudden?" I laughed humorlessly, raising my eyebrows.
"Accept the offer, or I might just go back to my rude self." He threatened jokingly making me put my hands up in surrender. "Please don't." I chuckled a bit.
"Alright, see you at lunch, then." He waved at me before turning around and entering the gates of school.
I sighed, tired. I'll give it time. I just hope it's not too long before she realizes everything.
I shook my head, and turned on my heel towards the school. My day was going to be shit, like always, but at least I had lunch to look forward to.
