Today was the day. I was finally going to take the advanced dance lessons I've only dreamt of so long.
As I entered the surprisingly big building, I took a deep breath, unable to control the big smile on my face.
"Min Y/N!" I heard one of the staff call out, running towards me. He had a grin, so I assumed I wasn't late for anything. He greeted me and went on about how happy he was to have someone like me here, how great the school was, blah blah.
Honestly, I knew it all already. Not that I was going to interrupt him, but still.
He ended up telling me that I was of the first few here and that I could pick my seat in the meeting room. "Of course, I suggested a better name, but do they listen? No." And still he kept talking. I wasn't even paying attention anymore as we entered the room. He eventually let me go take a seat, and what a relief that was.
Later, the headmaster went up to the front of the seated students. "Everyone!" He called out. Not many seemed to hear him. One of the girls next to me shouted for everyone to quiet down, and so they did. "Now that I have your undivided attention," he looked over the crowd before continuing. "I would like to welcome you all here and I hope that you will be able to develop your abilities and bring them to the fullest potential. Also, we have started dancing in doubles this year. Because it is something new, we ask that everyone participates. If you are not satisfied, then please feel free to walk out, the door is that way." Silence. "Very well. You will be asked to go to your respective dorms to find your rooms and roommates. Ladies, please go through that door. Boys, through the other one. Good luck to you all. Dismissed."
I followed my group, rethinking about what he said. Dancing in doubles... Not what I signed up for, but I guess I'll have to give it a try.
I was the last one to be given they keys to my room. The lady informed me that I was alone, since the others that were supposed to room with me had a family issue. "They were siblings, in case you were wondering." She asked me if I was okay with being alone. "I could ask the others if they wanted to have you room with them?"
"No, it's fine. I mean, I'm not complaining about more space to practice." I shrugged, then asked more directions to my room. After she gave them to me, I headed over.
Now today was really the start. My first class. I practiced my most impressive moves before heading over, because you never know what could happen. Somehow, I was the first one. The instructor wasn't even there. I waited for about five minutes before everyone was present.
The instructor went up to the front and introduced himself, then explained what he taught and what he expected from us. "My job is to get you to be good with a partner. Welcome to your doubles dancing class, boys and girls." He grinned. "Let's start pairing, shall we?"
He picked people at random, not even knowing their names. Eventually, he pointed to me and another boy. We were the last ones. We were told to go with our partners, then he would explain the rest.
"To start, I will give you or your partner a small piece of paper. On this paper, there will be one or two words written. Example, story and tragedy. That means that the group will have to choreograph a dance to represent a tragic story and find or produce a song to go with it. You must choreograph the dance. Understood?"
There was a chorus of 'Yes', then he went around and handed the papers to groups. Starting at the other end, I knew my partner and I would be last.
"Hi. I'm Y/N." I offered my hand.
He smiled shyly and shook my hand lightly. "I'm Sehun. Nice to meet you."
We somewhat chatted while waiting. Eventually, Sehun turned to his friends who were nearby. Just as he was about to introduce me to them, our instructor came up to hand the papers. Sehun was given ours. He opened it and showed it to me.
"'Story. War and romance'? I thought he only said one or two words..."
He shrugged. "I guess we'll just have to go with this."
Two days went by, and Sehun and I have really only talked about music. Finally picking a song, we could now move on to choreo.
One class, as we were all discussing or practicing, the instructor called for our attention. "First, your due date is in about a month. Since there are a lot of you, I won't give a specific date yet. Whoever is ready will go first. Second, one of your classmates will not be able to join us for any more classes. He has come down with severe allergies and was sent home. Jongin, you will have to join one of these groups. Have your pick."
Sehun seemed to really want him to join our group, and so he did. And so, we were a group of three. Sehun introduced me properly then we discussed choreography. Luckily Sehun and I hadn't come up with anything yet.
"Let's not do something predictable though." I pointed out, then explained an idea I had. The story was predictable at first. Two kingdoms at war with a love story involved. "But, and I'm just throwing this out there because I'm sure no one will think about it, instead of the prince falling for the one from the opposite kingdom, like most stories end, it's the two boys from the same kingdom. One of the two was told that they were supposed to marry the heir from the other kingdom, to make peace. So, it's almost two wars in one and there's a love story with a plot twist." They were quiet a moment and I quickly regret saying anything. "Or not. I mean, it was just a suggestion I thought of really quick..." I hid my face in regret.
"No, it's fine." Jongin reassured me. "I mean, as long as we don't kiss, it's fine." We laughed and I showed my face again. "Sehun?"
"Sure, why not." Sehun agreed. "Like you said, it's not that predictable, though we should try to make it seem that way at first." I nodded in agreement to his suggestion.
And so, we thought of a dance to match the story. In the end, we got the highest grade in the class, mostly for creativity and how we clearly told the story.
Later, as I was heading to my dorm after a long day of class, I heard someone call my name behind me. Turning around, I noticed it was Jongin. We greeted each other.
"I just wanted to say good job on coming up with the idea. It was great." He smiled, and I did in return, thanking him. "Though, I wouldn't have minded doing the predictable story... It would have been nice to have more choreo with you, but oh well." My cheeks flushed a bit, and I had no time to add anything before he spoke again. "Since tomorrow is a resting day, I was wondering if maybe you wanted to go out for lunch?" His face started to tint red. "Or something? Or not at all, I mean that's fine too, we don't have to-" I chuckled, causing him to stop talking.
"Would you let me answer your question?" I asked. He went quiet. "Yes, I would love to. Lunch sounds great." I smiled, and he did too. "See you then?"
He nodded, then came up to me and gave me a quick peck on the cheek. Leaving me speechless, he started to walk away, giving me a wave. I couldn't help but wave back, a stupid smile on my face.
I knew that coming here was a good idea, but I wasn't expecting to find happiness like this. This really was something unexpected, though I didn't mind. Surprises such as this were nice every now and then.
