Running through town, I feel a change in the people surrounding me. No drug dealers, no pissheads just general people walking around on a Saturday night. I check the time, shit. I begin to sprint through the crowds, ducking and diving accross the small streets. I wasn't a hundred percent sure where I was, and reading signs while running wasn't the best idea, as I crashed straight into a tall, bald man infront of me.
'Woah be careful!' He exclaimed, in a thick Irish accent. A small, black haired girl began to help me up off the pavement, brushing the bits off my back. 'I can manage, thanks.' I remark. She steps back.
'Your a bit young to be here on your own at this time, aren't you?' She questions suspiciously. I glare at her. 'I'm twenty two.' I reply and cross my arms. 'Who are you anyway, the age police?'
'No, actually.' The tall man responds, taking out his phone, 'But we do work for children's services.'
I take a gulp. I'm busted.
'So where would a young girl like yourself who looks no older than fourteen be heading?' The girl questions again, observing me carefully. The man answers a call, and without thinking I splutter out 'I'm fifteen you cheeky cow!'
She smiles. I sigh. 'I'm just going to meet some mates.' The young girl looks at me sympathetically, before linking my arm. 'Well how about we take you back home, safely. I'm sure your mates would understand and meet you at a more reasonable time.' I nod. Busted. I knew I should of lied. I could of said I was going to visit my sick granny in hospital, but knowing social workers they would escort me to the ward and everything. Nosey cunts.
'Im Tracie by the way.'
'Lola.'
The tall man turns his attention back to us, and appears to look quite distressed.
'What's wrong, Mike?' I shit myself. Mike. Thats the name of the other care worker from Elm Tree! Surely it's just a coincidence. A very, very BIG coincidence. I need to think fast.
'The new girl has run away through her window, and Gina needs me back at home.'
Tracie opens her mouth in horror. 'I didn't even know we were expecting a new girl?' She replies, as Mike looks at her with slight remorse.
'She has a few behavioural problems. Gina was worried you would intervene, I'm sorry Tracy.' He nudges her. She glares at him, but rolls her eyes and returns the conversation back to me. Shit.
'Well, we can drop Lola back home on the way can't we?' Mike opens his mouth in horror. I look down to the ground. Tracie raises an eyebrow. 'Mike?'
'This IS the new girl.' Mike sighs. Tracy looks at me, wide eyed. I've never seen someone look so shocked , angry yet dying to laugh all at once. I break the intense silence.
'Well this is how we meet...' Mike rolls his eyes. 'Come on. We can sort this at home.'
I follow them to the car. Tracie begins to make me giggle, making the situation appear a lot more childish and funny than serious and punishable. She doesn't seem a lot older than me, and her professional approach was no different.
'I can't believe you left me out of the new girls file. It can't be that bad.' I smirk, 'Is THAT why you have dragged me out here to look at new furniture?' I burst into laughter and so does Mike.
'No! Of course not!' He winks at me, as I open the back door of the car. The atmosphere doesn't feel as intense as what I was expecting. Its a feeling I can't describe very well, as any other time ive snuck out I've been dragged back by police officers.
'Lola if it's any consolation, Ginas only mad about things for a short while.' I smile, biting my lip, 'I wouldn't make a habit of it though,'
'I won't.' I lie, knowing full well that I'll be sneaking out again tomorrow as I haven't had chance to see Lexi today.
