Boston-

"Hey man are you coming to baseball practice tonight?" Ken asks as we meet up out of class.

"Nah, I have to watch Emma again." Emma was my younger sister. And while my mom was off working an extra shift at Two and a Half Servings, I had to watch her. Ken understood, being my best friend for the last ten years of my life.

"Ex alert!" Ken hissed to me as Maycee passed us. I rolled my eyes. Maycee the 'ex' was also Ken's current fling he called girlfriend.

She winked at Ken and strutted down the hallway, turning into a classroom.

"Can I remind you she's your girlfriend?"

"Mm, not for long. Look at Angela over there. You see her?" He pointed to the girl at the end of the hallway with long legs and tan skin.

"Yeah, so?"

"Well she's got killer legs and even more killer lips- I'm betting she's going to that party on Friday." Realizing what he was saying I stopped him.

"Ohh no. Ken, we talked about this. You can't just drop someone just to get with someone else. It's not fair to Maycee."

"Maycee who?" He joked, and I slapped the back of his head to try to get him to focus.

"I'm serious. Maycee did nothing wrong. You need to lay down your roots."

He scoffed, "what roots?" We passed Angela and she blushed as he whistled and checked her out. "Damnnn." He mumbled, then turned back to me. "Sorry man, what we're you saying?"

I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose. "Keep Maycee. Roots Ken. Roots."

"Right, roots, yeah of course." He rambled, not really listening. I couldn't ever really get him to listen. We turned into our English class and sat in our regular seats near the back. I was taking out my pencil as Ken smacked my chest and pointed to the front of the class. I looked to where his finger was pointing and nearly dropped my pencil.

At the front of the class was a new girl. And she was beautiful.

Her name was apparently Charlotte- I learned that when the teacher introduced her. She seemed shy, and kept to herself the rest of class.

She had long blonde hair and green eyes that could cause any man to be knocked off their feet.

Of course Ken whistled as she made her way towards us, her cheeks blushing wildly as she took her seat in front of me. I grumbled and sat back in my seat as I watched Ken try to woo her.

It always worked too. It was too bad. Charlotte seemed really sweet and she was about to be corrupted by the man-whore beside me.

"Are you free this friday?" I heard him ask when we got free time at the end of class.

"Yeah, actually. People don't really line up to hangout with the new girl." Even her voice was beautiful. It was smooth and deeper then Maycee's- whose was high pitched and frankly quite annoying.

"How would you like to go to a party? I'll be there so of course it'll be fun, and there'll be music and games and liquor if your into that." Ken smirked and I rolled my eyes trying to keep from smacking the back of his head again.

"You might wanna break up with your other girlfriend before you try to seduce a new one." I told him before Ken grunted and flicked my forehead. Charlotte only laughed and Ken's smirk never faltered.

"What girlfriend? I only see the pretty girl sitting besides me." Charlotte blushed again but surprised me.

"No thanks, I'm not really into threesomes if that's what you meant. But I'll be happy to hangout at the party if you still want me to go." She said smugly. Ken's mouth dropped open and his ears were tinted pink.

I couldn't help but chuckle. She was funny.

"I'm not saying that, no. Unless if I could get you to change your mind?" She grunted and pushed his shoulder.

"Gross."

"Ha. Kidding." He awkwardly laughed it off. I liked this girl. If she could make Ken flustered, then maybe we could stick to being friends. "But seriously- wanna go? I could pick you up at 8, and show you around the town before the party. I'd would be grea-" she cut him off, surprising me yet again.

"Who's your friend?" Charlotte asked, looking right at me. Her green eyes looked into mine. Ken's face darkened with a blush again. I struggled to keep from laughing at the look on his face. He had never been turned down by a lady like this- much less at all.

"I'm Boston." I said smoothly and shook her hand. "Nice to meet you."

"Yes, this gentleman over here is currently ninety five years old and that's the only reason he talks like this." Ken teased, slapping an arm over my shoulder.

"What, polite?" I retorted.

"Exactly." Charlotte said. "And if all ninety five year olds were like you, maybe I'd be into them too." She smiled as the bell rang and left quickly, leaving me slack jawed and sitting there alone.

"Come on Prince Charming. You have Calculus next, right?" Ken asked, pulling me up. I shook my head, trying to get her out of my head.

"Uh, yeah, I do." We walked out into the hallway again, and I accidentally knocked into a chick with black hair and blue highlights. She was my next door neighbor that I had only seen once or twice before. Maycee's stepsister. I struggled to remember her name.

She seemed really flustered though and I was worried that I hurt her.

"Hey are you ok, Jay?" I asked, remembering her name from a conversation with Ken like seven months ago. I reached out to touch her shoulder, to steady her but she rushed away without another word. Maybe I really did hurt her.

I felt awful.

After school- and awful calculus- ended, I headed out to my car, seeing Maycee's nearby.

"Hey!" I called out to Jay as she was about to get in the car. I jogged towards her, and tried not to feel the sinking feeling I usually felt when I had hurt or disappointed someone. She didn't respond until I reached her. "Jay," I said breathlessly. She was surprisingly hard to catch up to.

"Are you ok... Uh you know, from earlier?" She turned to look at me and I shifted my notebook from one hand to the other awkwardly.

"Fine." She squeaked. "I'm.. Fine. It's ok. Bye!" She seemed too happy to leave. She got in the car and it sped away. I looked back at the school when Ken had yelled to me from the entrance.

"Boston! Ma man! Just the one I wanted to see actually." He caught up to me and landed an arm over my shoulder. "So- uh, I was wondering if you were gonna go that party I was talking about earlier. You know, the one on Friday?" I shrugged his arm off of me.

"I don't know man. I don't wanna see you hit on some girls while your girl is at home eating her weight in ice cream and crying because you broke up with her. And just for a fling." I stepped away from him. "You really need to stop that." He didn't say anything to that and instead turned and walked to baseball. I went in the opposite direction to go look after my little sister.
