(A/N this one is a short chapter!)

Chiaki lay on the mat thinking about what had occurred that day. He had been alone for so long that he felt he had no purpose. He rubbed his thumb against the jewel of the necklace. He finally had it. A purpose. That's why he accepted so willingly. He had to protect that girl no matter what. His ears perked up.
"Come out, I know you're there." He said gently. Emiko stepped out from around the corner, walked to Chiaki. She sat down next to him.
"Did you need something?" He asked.
   "I'm sorry." She said
"Why are you apologizing?" Chiaki asked, looking at her. She avoided his eyes.
"You're being forced to stay here and protect a stranger. Even if I am happy you're here, its not fair to you." She said with a weak smile.
"No one is forcing me to do anything. Your father gave me a choice, didn't he? I'm CHOOSING to protect you. Even if you are strangers, you are good people." Chiaki said. Emiko continued staring down at her hands, twiddling her fingers.
Chiaki took a deep breath and reached out. He patted her head gently. She looked at him, tears in the corners of her eyes. He gave her his first genuine smile.
"Everything will be okay." He reassured. Emiko stared into his eyes for a moment. Her face scrunched up. She started to cry, pressing her face against Chiaki's blanketed legs. Chiaki continued to pet her head, repeating his reassurance.
