"Somebody please, help!"
I whipped my head around trying to find where the screaming was coming from in the field full of people. My eyes finally rested on a curly-haired girl kneeling over a skinny boy that was laying on the ground clutching his head and a football a few feet away from where they were. With the help from the girl next to him he slowly sat up and removed his hand from his head revealing a slight wound on his head above his right eye that trickled thick scarlet liquid down his temple to his cheek.
"I'm fine guys no need for that", the boy shouted with a large grin as one of his friends came over to help him stand up the rest of the way. "Just a little bump is all."
"Sorry about that man I thought you would have had that. Maybe we should get you to a doctor and make sure you're alright after taking one of my legendary football throws to the head", Zack strolled over to the boy clasping one of his hands on his shoulder. "Wouldn't want anything bad to happen to you, Jake."
"You're the one that caused the bad thing to happen to him in the first place Zack", the curly-haired girl that stood next to the boy named Jake spite out when she addressed Zack.
The three of them continued to talk as they walked to the side of the field that had the cars parked. The party resumed and everyone went back to what they were doing before the incident occurred.
"That guy is such a jackass. I bet he did it on purpose and is just trying to cover his ass", Greg blurted when we sat back down on the logs by the bonfire. The heat from the flames was the only thing that kept the cool night air at bay. Sammi and Dakota also added their negative input about Zack while I sat staring down at the ground.
I felt eyes on me and realized that Greg was gazing over at me. Well, more accurately my shirt which was still wet from the drunk girl's drink.
"Did that girl spill her drink on you as well when you two bumped into each other", he asked when he saw I caught him staring at me.
"Yeah I guess so", I replied to him.
"I have an extra shirt in the back of my truck if you want to change out of the wet one. I can't imagine it feels too comfy to be wearing that now."
"Thanks, I'd appreciate that Greg."
Greg stands up and holds his hand out to help me up. I accept it and grab ahold of his hand with a small smile on my face. I followed behind him as he led me over to his truck that was over by the other vehicles. The silence making the walk almost unbearably awkward.
"Have you been having fun so far tonight? You know despite some things", he said looking away when he said the last part.
"I have to be honest I have been."
I did have a good time despite the awkwardness with him and the two bump ins I had earlier.
"That's good."
More awkward silence.
"Look.... I know it's been a little awkward between us since that Christmas party a few months ago and honestly, I've been wanting to talk to you about it since the kiss happened, but the opportunity never really seemed to be right. I guess what I'm wanting to say it."
I cut him off before he had a chance to start again. "It didn't really mean anything. It was a one-time thing that happened cause we both drank a little too much Greg. There's not too much to be worried over and there's nothing to really feel awkward about. Things like this happened."
We reached his dark blue Ram truck when I had finished my sentence and leaned against the side of it. Greg was silent for a while with an unreadable expression on his face before he finally spoke. "Maybe it didn't mean much for you Alex. But for me it made things a little clear for me. I still like you." By the end of his sentence, he was looking into my eyes. His bright green eyes shone bright with hope at what I would say next, but I couldn't find my voice though. How does one react to this kind of thing again?
Probably giving up hope that I'll respond anytime soon he unlocked his truck and grabbed the spare shirt we had come for and handed it to me. It wasn't anything special just a plain black V-neck shirt.
"You can get changed in the back. The windows should be tinted enough so no one will see I'll wait out here and turn my back to you if you want", Greg told me as he motioned for me to go inside. "You also don't need to say anything back to what I said either. At least not till you're ready so you don't need to worry about saying anything back to me."
I simply nodded my head as a crawled into the back onto the cool black colored leather seats and closed the door behind me. When I had changed, I ended up misplacing where I placed my sweater in the back of his truck. As I searched around, I found a pair of pants that were wet. Why does he have wet pants in his truck? Did he spill something on them or walk into the river? I set them aside and looked for my sweater. When I finally located it and I knocked on the window to let Greg know he needed to more out of the way and opened the door.
"Why do you have a wet pair of pants in your truck?"
"Oh, I had to change earlier after I spilled my drink on myself. Luckily, I usually bring some spares in case I ever need a change of clothes."
"THERE YOU GUYS ARE!"
Dakota yelled running over to us with Sammi not far behind him. Both had a scared look on their faces when they stopped in front of us panting to catch their breath.
"The cops are on their way and you won't believe why! That girl you bumped into earlier Alex; she's drowned in the river!"
My blood went cold and could feel it leaving my face as my hands went numb.
She's dead...
