Astra
I wake up to a pain in my neck, metaphorically and oh so literally.
Griffin isn't awake yet and from what I could gather from his constant snoring last night he must have slept soundly.
I, on the other hand, did not. Thanks to my selfless-ness in offering him the bed, I had the floor all night. I don't like sleeping on the floor much but I didn't want to seem rude so I let him have it.
I stand up from the cold floor, I slept in my clothes so I didn't have to get changed and I decide to grab some wood for the fire.
Mya joins me outside and I grab an axe that's just inside the door before heading outside.
I shiver instantly, it's colder than it was yesterday and it's not even snowing yet.
The snow crunches underfoot and I head towards the wood pile that's by the side of the cabin.
That Griffin guy better not expect me to make him food or I'll throw another knife at him, and this time I won't just nick his ear.
Where I'm from women are equal to men, but not all the country is the same, and I have a feeling he isn't from Kathmere. Maybe he's from Doogan, that would explain his semi-annoying personality.
By the time I'm finished splitting the wood I have a hungry stomach and a splinter in my left hand.
When I enter the cabin Griffin is no longer sleeping, In fact, he's no longer anywhere in the room. "What a pain in the butt" I huff, "I help him out of the cold, give him my bed and don't ask for anything in return then he just runs off without even saying thanks!"
"What was that darlin'?" I turn around and see Griffin standing in the doorway with two paper bags in hand. He managed to make the doorway look smaller.
"You didn't think I'd just run off without saying goodbye to you did ya?" He says with a cheeky grin.
"U-uh I was talking to Mya, she's a very unthankful companion." Embarrassment warming my face. "So, whatcha got there?" I ask diverting the attention.
He walks over and holds one of the bags out. I grab it and wince; that stupid splinter.
"You alright? Not allergic to touching paper bags are you?" He adds with a small smile.
"No paper bags are fine, pieces of wood stuck in my flesh... not so much."
"Well lucky for you I'm an expert at fixing wounds big or small no one gets left behind!" Griffin says a little too enthusiastically while holding out his hand.
"Huh?" I say turning my head to the side.
"Let me have a look" he says this time a little less jokingly and more kindly. "I'll help you." His voice was a lot softer now, nicer then I've heard it.
I slowly hold my hand out to him, he takes it in his, looking at it rather intently and turns it over revealing the splinter.
He goes to touch it and my hand flinches as the splinter is pulled from my flesh. I pull my hand away and look at it.
"Your not very gentle are you." I say more harshly than I meant to.
"Sorry, I'm not used to doing medical things on other people." He says quietly, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Didn't you get to practice on any siblings?" I ask him wanting to know more about his past.
"Not really." he says, and goes back to taking care of the paper bags he brought in with him before he pulled at the splinter in my hand.Griffin
I've never really talked about my family with others before, let alone my sisters. Partially because I didn't ever want to, because there was no one I trusted, and because I never really knew them that well.
I knew they looked like me, and that they grew up a couple hours north-west of Georgeton like I did. But after I was taken off to work for who I do now, I haven't heard or seen of them.
To think it's been almost thirteen years makes me feel sick. They could be married, have kids. They could be dead and I wouldn't even know.
Astra says something again, but I don't catch it.
"There's food stuff from the tavern in them." I said, nodding to the paper bags I brought in, "I've eaten already so, help yourself." I walked further into the room, grabbing my leftover weapons and bag, preparing to leave.
"Um, thanks for letting me stay. Was very... Nice of you Astra." I said, looking back at her with a smile as I reached the door.
"Hold on a sec," she yelled at me while grabbing her bag and coat. "You're not getting away that easily."
I give her a confused look.
"I let you stay, you played music, I threw a knife at your head, you threw one at me, up until then we were even but after you brought breakfast we're not. So I'm afraid your stuck with me until I can repay the debt." She said crossing her arms. I don't think there's anyway I could get her to change her mind.
"So you're just going to follow me till you repay this 'debt' thing?"
"Pretty much, I have time to anyway." She said, shrugging her shoulders.
"Perfect, just perfect." I mumble under my breath. She may have time but I sure don't. Let alone have a place for her to go if she doesn't 'repay me' when I meet up with my superiors.
Maybe I could stage my murder so she'd have to save me? That could work, but I might then be in debt to those who I'd have to ask to 'kill' me.
Why does everything have to be so hard?
"At least bring the food with you. I don't wanna have to carry you 'cause you haven't been eating." I mumbled, continuing to walk out the door and into the snow once again. "Are you even heading towards Frostholme?" I asked, turning back to her a few steps out from the porch.
"Yes, I have to drop something off there that I picked up at Keresik." she said, standing on the top step with the paper bags in her hand. I wouldn't say she looked a little cute, but...
"You look like an idiot." I thought that might be a bit too straightforward. So I told her she looked like an idiot. I was so smart.
She was looking at me like I was an idiot. I was. Without a doubt.
"Let's just go." I said, ducking my head and walking towards the side of town that lead to Frostholme.
I was supposed to meet up with Gatsby anytime after this checkpoint, and I kinda hope she won't freak out like some others do. They see him, in his monstrous hugeness and either go completely silent in shock, or run away screaming.
She didn't seem like the kind of gal to do that, but she's surprised me so far so I guess I'll know when she sees him.
