Venusaur
Grass/Poison
Gen 1
Role: Tank/Status Inflicter
Solid starter, just like the other two gen 1 starters. Venusaur can pack a punch with high-damage moves such as Sludge Bomb and Solar Beam, which are powered due to STAB.
It can also counter most types super-effective to it, such as Earthquake for fire types and Grass moves for ground types. Its ability when Mega evolved, Thick Fat, gives a resistance to fire and ice types as well.
But I find Venusaur as a Status Inflicter the best. Having played multiple Pokemon games, I find that Venusaur just can't cope with the fast sweepers out there. However, if he uses certain moves like Sleep Powder, Toxic and Giga Drain, Venusaur can take a hit, get his opponent to sleep(for most of the time, as Sleep Powder is 85% hit rate) and get Toxic on it and keep using Giga Drain after to gain back the hp you lost. On average your opponent will wake up after 2-3 turns, enough for the Toxic to worsen and to have taken a beating. Mostly not long after, your opponent will faint. This is the best moveset I've used so far, although leveling up may be more boring and harder.
