I lean against the wooden front of the main lodge, exhausted.
It's been a shit time here and I can't wait until the cops come and get us out of here.
The rays of the early morning sun filter through the net of branches on the big oak tree next to the lake. I close my eyes, enjoying the warm tingle spreading across my body.
Next to me, Jax shifts, so we're supporting each other with our weights. I didn't think Jax would survive. But I'm glad he did. I can still feel the thick tension in the air. After everything that's happened, it's a miracle we have enough trust that we can be this close to each other. As if he can hear my thoughts, Jax slips his hand into mine as a sort of friendly gesture. I give his hand a tight squeeze, and finally manage to relax.
I feel my mind drifting off to a different place. I hear my breathing even. I'm slowly losing myself. Maybe it's the blood loss.
As the sound of wailing police sirens fill the air, I know that this is a sign that it's all over.
So I let myself go.
