In the previous two years, Alfild had stabilized her kingdom and established herself as queen. Across Scandinavia, she was respected as a strong and powerful leader. No one wished to make an enemy of her as, not only was she a useful ally, she was a most unstoppable enemy.
Since taking the throne, kattegat had withered in power. It was still Norway's most prominent trade center however Queen Aslaug's power was questionable at best. Kattegat was not an enemy of Alfild's Kingdom. But, unlike King Harald, Earl Lagertha, and many others, Queen Aslaug and Alfild had not forged an alliance.
Alfild sat upon her throne, knife in hand. Outside, men and women scurried about in fear of disturbing her. However, this did not last long. A queen rarely had time to herself.
"My Queen, somebody from Kattegat is here to speak to you." One of her men announced.
She paused, taking a deep breath to mentally prepare herself, before speaking. "Send them in."
When her eyes landed upon Sigurd Ragnarsson, she seemed less than impressed. Nevertheless, she watched as the young man walked closer. A sinister grin curled onto the Queen's lips as she held her knife into the arm of her throne. Her eyes contained the fire that the ragnarssons had seen over two years prior, none of her rage have disappeared. In fact, if anything, it had only grown.
"Sigurd, son of King Ragnar, and what is it that you are here for today." Her eyes gleamed as the words slipped from her tongue with an icy venom.
"My father is dead." Sigurd explained. "I was sent here to ask if you would help us avenge him."
"Sent here by your brothers because they were too afraid to see me themselves, hm?" She smiled with cold eyes. "It is true, your father was a great man, but he is dead. What business do I have with those in Valhalla? I have hundreds of living men and women that need me. The dead are gone, Sigurd, the living are hungry."
"If you join us, we could make an alliance." He suggested.
The queen thought for a moment before delivering her reposte. "I can only form an alliance with your queen. So, if your mother is-"
Before I could even finish, Sigurd had interrupted. "Aslaug is dead. Lagertha is our new Queen."
"Then it seems Kattegat and I already have an alliance." She pondered for a moment. It was true that Alfild believed Ragnar to be one of the greatest men to ever live. How could one not? He was a legend among men. But her joining this army would not benefit Ragnar, he was dead. And, surely, it would not benefit her people either. The only people it could possibly benefit were the sons of Ragnar. And she did not wish to lift a finger for a single one of them. In fact, if it was up to her, they'd all be dead. So, why did Queen Lagertha not have them killed? And what was she planning? "I've decided I will go back to Kattegat with you, but I cannot promise you my forces. Though your father was a great man, I cannot say the same for the men who wish to avenge him. Nevertheless, I would like to speak to your queen."
