As I trudged on home, I thought of what I would tell her. She'd be so angry with me, for not being able to connect with the guys. We were falling apart.
John's death had divided more than just our love. The comradery, it seemed to be slipping from our hands.
I made my way to the door, and took a breath to prepare myself.
As I opened the door, Eliza pushed her way through.
"Hey! Didn't see you there."
She smoothed down her apron, and gave me a puzzled look.
"You're home early. That didn't take very long, now did it?"
"No, I guess it didn't. Things didn't exactly go to planned, to say the least."
She sat down on the steps, and I joined her.
"What happened? Were they not home?"
"No, they all were. I suppose that all of this John business is a little much for some of the guys."
I explained to her what had happened.
"Alexander, I'm very sorry. You said Angelica was there?"
"Oh. Yes, she told me to go back to you. And, well, here I am."
"Classic Angelica. But, I do suppose I'll have to go see her later, then."
