After the American Civil War ended, William Gibson married Dorcas Sanders. They settled in Hanover, Indiana for the remainder of their lives, traveling to Louisville, Kentucky occasionally to visit friends and relatives. The couple had five children: Louisa Hackney, Mary Gibson, Hattie Gibson, William Gibson Jr., and Leonidas Gibson.
Gibson re-enlisted after a few years with the 10th United States Cavalry, becoming the only man to be identified so far who served both as a soldier of the famous 54th and as a Buffalo Soldier. While in the 10th US Cavalry, he served for a time during the Indian Wars. But that, my friends, is a story for another day.
