I glanced down at my watch for the millionth time, my eyes once again searching for the familiar face in the sea of mostly strangers. Kongpob returning my gaze immediately as he raised his perfectly shaped brows questioningly. Mouthing his concern in a way he always did every time I looked his way in the middle of the shoot.
"Everything ok?"
It wasn't really. We were supposed to get out of this blasted place hours ago. But then some random prop broke so we had to wait around for that. And then the lighting wasn't just right so there was that. And then one of the actor's makeup started getting all wonky so that needed to get fixed. By the end everyone was grumpy, and cranky, and tired and took one too many takes to get the scene right. And by everyone I meant me. Which only made me more annoyed cause I absolutely needed to be somewhere else.
You see it was Kong's birthday. And other than his estranged mother, I was probably the only soul under the sun that knew he turned 28 today. In the past nine years it was almost an unwritten rule that no matter what, we would spend our birthdays together. Not that we don't already spend like 20 of the 24 hours in day hanging around each other, but still I wanted today to be extra special.
I have been noticing how particularly challenging I have been lately. As if Kong's job wasn't taxing enough with juggling our insane schedules, on top of that he had a whiny brat complaining all the time, and let's not even talk about all my disastrous affairs that he has had to deal with.
So I reserved a table at his favorite restaurant, had a perfect bottle of champagne shipped in, got a celebrity chef to cook us a lavish meal, but all of that was going to go to utter waste if we didn't leave like right fucking now!
But after six more hours of take after take after take we finally stumbled into the car. My supposed plans completely crushed. I was so excited about surprising him with the one decent thing I wanted to do for him that I hadn't even gotten around to wish him all day. And now the stupid day was over and Kong was still typing away at his phone. I think Mr. Grumpy is about to come back into the picture.
Now I know it would be easy to just say a simple 'happy birthday'. Especially since I have been waiting to say those two simple words all damn day. But instead of just spouting the words my brilliant brain decided I was going to make attempt number two tomorrow night cause I will be damned if I don't treat him to the best dinner money can buy.
"So...uh...Kong...about tomorrow..."
The elevator pinged as we reached our floor, the words still lingering on my lips as I noticed his attention no longer on me. Actually no longer on his phone, I mean. Instead he cocked his head on the side as he stared at the threshold of his door. Tracing his eyeline I couldn't help but look over at what had caught his attention all of a sudden.
You ever feel like you know precisely the moment in your life when everything is about to get royally fucked up? That's exactly the emotion that ran up and down my spine as we walked up to the overblown bouquet of flowers sitting right outside his door. Completely surrounded by chocolates and stuffed toys and teddy bears and a cake and all the typical birthday jazz. Sitting innocently between all the extravaganza was a card and whatever was written on it was obviously enough to put a tiny smile on Kong's blank face. Snatching it away from his hands I read the note with a deep frown shrouding my brows.
Happy Birthday Kong!
Too bad you couldn't make dinner tonight.
Don't forget you promised me a date.
Hope you had a great day anyway.
See you soon!
