Zak stepped foot outside, inhaling the fresh scent of the rain hitting concrete.
"Zak, where are you going?" Darryl asked. Zak turned back.
"Just for a walk," he said, carelessly slipping his hands inside his pockets. The rain showered down.
"In the rain? Really?"
The boy grinned cutely. "Yeah," he said. He then swiveled on his heels and headed off in no time.
Darryl's eyes followed as his small, vulnerable figure walked down the dark, gloomy street. "But you'll get a cold," he muttered. There was no response.
Zak continued to walk; he embraced the cold rain as it soaked into his hoodie, gazing at the melancholy clouds up above. He didn't recognise anything. It was all a new place, a fresh canvas with just him and his best friend.
The breeze howled and wind blew into his face, allowing him to feel that somewhat calming chill as he observed the area around him. Darkness. Alleyways. A nearby lamppost illuminated the raindrops as they poured down above him.
Which way to go? he wondered. There were many. He had the whole place to explore, being not completely alone: he had the comforting rain to accompany him. He inhaled. Then exhaled, and then bounced on his heel, deciding to take the path to the left.
He didn't really think much of how dark the path was becoming. He didn't notice as the lights from the lampposts wavered and the rain grew heavier and heavier around him.
