I sighed, getting out of the back seat as Mother and Prince piled out from the front seats. She made me sit in the back, arguing that I could just ride in front on the way back. She wasn't supposed to come, but insisted since she felt that it was important that Prince get proper help with choosing stuff, and since she was carrying more money than she promised, I felt that that was a good enough reason.
I was already walking to the hardware store, annoyed with them both. I heard Prince run up behind me, and I scoffed as he caught up to me. Curse him being taller and probably more active.
"So do you have any idea of what you should look for?" Mom asked behind us, and I turned to see Prince's silver hair blowing everywhere in the summer breeze. I chuckled as he tried to pat it down with his hands while walking.
"Maybe a hair dresser." I suggested with a giggle. Prince turned to me with a glare.
"Nope, Mom. I was hoping Ben could help me." he said, making me arch my eyebrows in annoyance. Mom decided that him calling her Cindy just wouldn't do since he was really already part of the family, and it irked me more than anything that he agreed on calling her Mom. He smirked at my frustration as we walked in the store, the automatic doors opening. We stopped for a silent moment for Mom to catch up, us not realizing we were in our own world and speed walking.
"My goodness boys, could you go any faster? I'm older than I used to be you know." she said, smiling as she put her right hand on her hip, the other carrying her large purse. I don't know why she even bothered carrying that humongous bag around, it was kind of ridiculous. It made me wonder if she was Mary Poppins and she had a lamp somewhere in there.
"Sorry." Prince and I said in unison. I turned to him and glared, him returning it with immediate pleasure.
"I think we should start with paint and stuff." I said, walking towards what I assumed was the way to paint. Prince didn't bother to catch up with me as I zoomed off, finding the paint and waiting for them to catch up. They got there sooner than I expected, and they started looking at the white colors. I sighed and pulled out my phone, playing on one of the only games I had, which was Temple Run. It got popular a few years ago, so I got it and actually enjoyed it. I heard there was a second one, but I didn't bother with that one.
I groaned as I died for the ten millionth time, Prince and Mother still not able to pick out a color. I locked my phone and put it in my jean's pocket, proceeding to go over to the most indecisive people I ever knew when I heard someone clear their throat behind me. I turned to see a girl around my age, her arms behind her back as she looked at me nervously. She was taller than me with honey brown hair, her big eyes dewy and green, a button nose and full lips covered with lip gloss. She was pretty, what was she doing talking to me?
"Um, excuse me. I-it's just that I saw you over here and..." she stuttered, looking everywhere but me. Oh my god, was I getting hit on by a girl? I had this kind of experience when I was in middle school, but this was super weird since I came out as gay. I got even more nervous than her, jamming my hands into my jean pockets. "Are you by any chance related to that guy over there? I-I was wondering because... well..." she said, her eyes pleading.
For some reason my heart sunk, and I relaxed, now even more annoyed than I was before. Even though I was gay, it was still a compliment to get hit on by girls, it meant that I looked attractive. Supposedly not as attractive as Prince though. Who was she to think that she could ask me permission to ask him out? Why did this make me so angry? It wasn't jealously. I took my hands out of my pockets and crossed them.
"No, not exactly. I wouldn't bother with him though, he kind of has his heart set on someone else." I said, feeling an evil smirk come on as I said this. It was nice to gloat like this, even though I still felt somewhat sympathy for her. She kind of froze for a second and nodded.
