Chapter Nine

Lightningpaw continued his training for the next couple of weeks. Sometimes he trained with with the other three apprentices. He learned that Stonepelt was Moonpelt's mother. Snowheart explained that she and Crystalstorm were just comforting their mother. She only missed a couple of training sessions. One of those times he asked Splashpaw about Moonpelt. Because Moonpelt was Splashpaw's mother too. Splashpaw just responded with that she wanted to focus on her apprentice duties.

"Just that?" Lightningpaw mewed when Splashpaw responded

"Well, that and the fact that Snowheart and Crystalstorm are older than me, so they've seen more than me. And they know how to deal with it." Splashpaw explained

Lightningpaw thought for a second.

"Come on!" Splashpaw flicked her tail, "let's continue our test."

Lightningpaw followed her. He heard something scuffling in the leaves. He flicked his ear towards a small bush where the noise was coming from. Splashpaw noticed it to. Splashpaw lepted behind the bush. Two mice scurried out. Lightningpaw caught one with his paw. He ducked as Splashapw leaped over him and caught the other mouse. Lightningpaw was impressed. Who know Splashpaw as that quick. Lightningpaw looked up. The clouds were pink from the sunset sky. He looked back at Splashpaw who was canning for any more prey.

"It's getting late, we should probably get back to the others.

"Ok." Lightningpaw carried one of the mice, Splashpaw carried the other. They kept going until Splashpaw suddenly leaped into the air. Lightningpaw looked and realized Splashpaw had caught a sparrow. Splashpaw let out a quick rrow! As she landed awkwardly on her front paw. Lightningpaw padded over.

"Are you ok?" Lightningpaw asked

"Yeah..." Splashpaw muttered

"Can you put pressure on it?"

"A little" Splashpaw hissed as she struggled to get up.

"You caught the sparrow." Lightningpaw pointed out

"Yeah!" SPlashpaw mewed

Splashpaw carried the sparrow and Lightningpaw carried the two mice the way back. Lavenderbreeze and Scarletpaw, Oakpaw, Pyritepelt, and Russetspots were already waiting.

"What did you catch?" Russetspots asked seeing them appear in the small clearing.

"We each caught a mouse each and Splashpaw caught a sparrow and hurt her paw." Lightningpaw explained

Spashpaw limped in carrying her sparrow. Her eyes shining with pride.

"You caught that?" Scarletpaw mewed astonished

Splashpaw nodded.

"Well, let's get back to camp to drop of the fresh kill and your going to the medicine cat's den, Splashpaw."

Every cat nodded and Followed Russetspots back to camp.

They ran into the rouges.

"Uh, hi," Willow mewed, "Silverstar let us go, so we're heading back to Twoleg place."

"Ok, just don't cause anymore trouble." Russetspots mewed.

The two groups passed each other. The apprentices dropped of their fresh kill in the fresh kill pile. Russetspots took Splashpaw the the medicine cat's den. Lightningpaw headed over to the apprentices' den. He then saw Snowheart pad out of the queens' den. Lightningpaw walked up to her.

"Hi.." Lightningpaw mewed

"Hi, how was your third hunting mission?" Snowheart asked

"I-I caught a mouse."

"Good!"

They both turned as Silverstar headed out of her den and went up the high rock. The let out a caterwaul. Everycat rushed out of their dens and out eh entrance.

"What's going on?" Lightningpaw quivered

"Practice," Snowheart spoke quickly, "C'mon"

Lightningpaw followed his mentor. The clan went into a small area surrounded by bushes. It was only a couple fox-lengths away from the camp entrance.

"Practice for what?" Lightningpaw meowed at last

"Snow slide." Snowheart answered

"A what?"

"A snow slide it when the snow at the top of that mountain becomes loose and tumbled onto our camp."

"Just snow?"

"It can bury the camp in less than a heartbeat."

"But I can still see the camp..."

"It's a practice. Since it's so dangerous we practice from when it does happen, we know what to do."

"How do we know if it is a practice or the real thing?"

"Silverstar will shout 'run' if it is a real snow slide. If not she'll just caterwaul if it's a practice." Snowheart explained

Lightningpaw nodded, then turned around as Splashpaw limped to the rest of the group. Swanfeather not too far behind her.

"Sorry." Swanfeather meowed

"It's fine, just be quicker next time." Silverstar meowed

Splashpaw went over to Russetspots and asked for an explanation. Lightningpaw was sure that every apprentice so far had asked about what was happening. Silverstar padded in front of the croup then called them to follow her with a flick of her tail. They headed back to camp. Everycat went back to where they were before. Lightningpaw stopped besides Snowheart.

"You can go rest. I have a patrol tomorrow morning, you can join if you'd like."

Lightningpaw nodded. Then he headed towards the apprentice's den.
