Chapter Five

Lightningpaw woke up the paws prodding at his side. He opened his eyes to see Spashpaw. He tried to keep his pelt smooth. He sat up.

"Come on!" Spashpaw mewed tilting her head towards the den entrance, "We've got training to do!"

She bounded outside into the clearing. Lightningpaw stood up and quickly stretched, then headed to the clearing. He sat by Splashpaw. Surprised to see Scarletpaw. He scanned the camp, he saw Snowheart talking to Crystalstorm. Lightningpaw guessed Snowheart was asking Crystalstorm a question, because Crystalstorm nodded soon before Snowheart turned away. Crystalstorm went inside the warrior's den. He turned his head around and saw Oakpaw and Pyritepelt padded up. He heard pawsteps behind him and saw Russetspots.

"What's going on?" Lightningpaw asked.

"We're all going to train together," Snowheart explained, "I'm going to mentor Scarletpaw for today, to let Lavenderbreeze rest."

Lightningpaw felt shame wash beneath his pelt. He lowered his gaze.

"But then that would leave Oakpaw and his mentor alone. So we planned to do a training session together."

All the apprentices nodded.

"What are we gonna do?" Splashpaw asked, tilting her head to the side.

"Battle training." Russetspots mewed stepping in.

"Ok." Splashpaw said jumping to her paws.

The rest sat up more slowly. Then they all walked out the entrance. They stopped at a small round clearing.

"Ok you all, " Pyritepelt started pointing his tail at the apprentices, "sit on that side."

They all sat in a line. And the warriors sat in the other side. Snowheart padded up.

"Scarletpaw, can you come up please."

Scarletpaw padded up.

"Try swinging your paw at me and remember to keep your claws sheathed." Snowheart instructed

Scarletpaw nodded, then crouched low to the ground. Her paw swiped Snowheart swerved her paw around Scarletpaw's and shoved it towards the ground. Scarlet paw quickly went to attack with her other paw and padded Snowheart on the head. Snowheart stepped back in response, she nodded approvingly.

"You were just gonna show her how to block a paw swipe, but she thought one step ahead, didn't she?" Pyritepelt meowed.

Snowheart rolled her eyes and continued.

"That's actually what to do when someone blocks you paw swipe, but they could easily duck out of the way. Here try swiping at my head like last time. Snowheart put her paw on Scarletpaw's When Scarletpaw when to swipe at Snowheart's head, but she ducked out of the way and reared up on her back legs, then pounced on Scarletpaw. They rolled a couple times in the grass. Snowheart lifted her head.

"What will you do now?" Snowheart mewed

Scarletpaw pushed her back paws against Snowheart's belly. They tried to push Snowheart of but could. Snowheart nodded. Then stepped off. Scarletpaw sat up. Snowheart looked at the other apprentices.

"I want you to practice this move in teams of two. Oakpaw, your with Splashpaw, and Scarletpaw, your with Lightningpaw." She turned away, "It's ok if you go find a clearing near here, if there isn't any room."

Lightningpaw padded over to Scarletpaw.

"What do you want to do?" He asked

"Huh?" She mewed

"Do you want to stay here or go find another place?"

"Oh, uh....let's just...go- find another place." Scarletpaw stuttered.

"Ok."

The two found a small patch of grass. It was only big enough to fit another cat. The two started practicing battle moves. It was only a short while before Lightningpaw caught a whiff of something odd. He went to a side of the small clearing. He sniffed, he smelled a mix the fens that were nearby and cat sent.

"What is it?' Scarletpaw asked as she padded up behind him

Lightningpaw looked back at Scarletpaw.

"I smell cats." He answered

Scarletpaw looked worried.

"Show we tell the others?"

"Let's see who it is. I can't smell the exact scent because ferns. Plus it may just be the border patrol."

He stalked away before Scarletpaw could answer. The traveled from within the bushes. The came across a scrawny group of cats. None of the looked or smelled familiar.

"They must be rouges! But why are they in MistClan territory?" Scarletpaw whispered

"We should go back and get the others."

When they tried to turn away, Lightningpaw stepped on a twig, it snapped. They both froze. They were about to book it out of there when a rouge leaped at them. He landed on Scaretpaw who let out a yelp as the tom landed on her. Lightningpaw swiped at the tom's shoulder. The rouge tom yowled And turned it's beady yellow eyes to Lightningpaw. Splashpaw just barley managed to knock the tom off. She scrambled to her paws. "Come on!" Lightningpaw yowled.

He grabbed Scarletpaw but the scruff. They started running to find the clearing.They burst through the bushes. The others eyes were wide with surprise.

"What happened?" Russtespots meowed

"There are...rogues...in our... territory...they attacked....us." Lightningpaw meowed through gasps.
