Justin was your best friend...or at least he had been. You guys used to do everything together, until he moved away with his mom because of his parents' divorce. You both were close to becoming adults yet you always acted like two immature goofballs. But ever since he moved contact with him became less and less. You tried calling and texting him, but he would barely answer, and if he did it would be short and harsh. You were the only one trying to keep the friendship going and there was no give and take.
You finally gave up trying after he had been gone for 6 months. It hurt. A lot. You couldn't deny you missed the memories you had made together. For the past 5 years you two were inseparable. Many of your friends at school and even your family assumed you would end up dating. Let's just say you wouldn't have turned him down if he ever asked. He was a great guy...not to mention he was really attractive. The fact was you had always liked him...perhaps loved him?...but you hid it in the very depths of your heart, for fear that Justin would find out and be utterly disturbed and also that it was kind of disturbing to think about him in a different way, as a potential boyfriend. As of late you didn't care what he was to you, you just wanted to talk to him, to see him again. You missed him like crazy and no one even tried being as good of a friend to you as he had been. You used to sit up late, talking about problems, dreams, the future...everything. You trusted him and he trusted you. He would give you advice when you had boy problems, and vice versa. He was your crying shoulder when everything seemed to go wrong. Now being void of Justin made your heart ache for the comfort he gave you. You honestly loved him. Not the stupid fluffy teenager puppy love, real genuine love that you feel for your bestfriend or your family. The kind that just doesn't go away if someone moves or loses contact. Unconditional. At least that's how you felt...and at the moment you knew you were in denial... Justin clearly didn't care as much as you did. If he did he would have responded to your texts and said more than "he was ok" or "I'm just busy." You had to move on sooner or later. But the pang of all the memories wouldn't allow you to let go, just yet. You weren't the kind of person to just move on from a friendship or relationship and pretend that nothing ever happened. Sure, maybe you became to attached...but didn't everyone? You knew for a fact that once you become close to a person and grew to love them that you could never really stop loving them, it would just fade to the back of your mind. But it would always be there, like a little cloud taking up a tiny space in your heart. Some days the cloud would feel like it wasn't even there, but other days it felt heavy and burdensome. Tonight was like that. Lying in your bed you stared blankly into the darkness, tears streaming down your cheeks. Yeah, you were sad. You basically lost your best friend. You were mad. Mad that he had to leave, but even more mad that he didn't even care about you enough to try. To try to stay in touch. But he hadn't and you gave up, if he didn't want to put in effort you wouldn't either. Gritting your teeth you wiped your face, sitting up in bed. The clock read 10:56 P.M. Sleep wasn't going to overtake you at the moment so you decided to go for a walk. Living in a small town with lots of land you had luxury of going outdoors often. Grabbing a jacket you sent your mom a text just in case she got up and wondered where you had gone. Stepping out into the brisk air, the breeze ruffled your hair. Standing in your driveway you just stared ahead at the expansive field in front of your house, the moon reflecting just enough light. Turning on your heel you headed toward the backyard. You decided you would go to one of Justin's favorite spots of all time: the creek. It was on the outskirts of the woods right behind your house. You had gone there to have your deepest conversations, or just to play around on the rocks. There was a huge log which had fallen perfectly over the running creek, you both had called it the "thinking log" because you always went there to think about life. Trudging through the woods, the leaves crunched under your boots. The sound of the bubbling creek gave you a comforting feeling as you approached it. Nearing the "thinking log" you quickly stopped in your tracks as you saw a dark silhouette sitting on the log. Adrenaline rushed through your body. Your first thought was to run, but instead you waited for a moment. How would someone find the creek when only you and Justin knew about it?
