The first game was between cabins one and two. Cabin one lined up, led by their counselor, Jackson. On the opposite side of the field, cabin two did the same. Mark, the counselor, jokingly saluted Jackson before he called out, "It was nice knowing you, Jackson. You're a good man, but that doesn't mean I'll go easy on you. We're still gonna crush you today!" The team roared with laughter as Jackson took a step forward.
"If you're gonna talk smack, get ready to get smacked. If you're so confident, then cut the talk and prove your skills," Jackson shouted.
Chan's campers weren't paying much attention to the match as they began pestering Chan. "Hey," Hyunjin said, "Is that your friend Jackson from your story? The one who—"
Chan clamped a hand over Hyunjin's mouth. "It's an embarrassing story; I thought we agreed to never speak of it again."
The group spent the rest of the match chatting and quietly bickering before a whistle blew and a winner was announced. The last two players in the game had been Mark and Jackson, and Jackson had won. Groups three and four were called out onto the field.
Chan's team was chanting "blue team" over and over again as they marched onto the field, pumping their fists in the air with each step. Jeongin couldn't help but laugh as Chan marched at the front of the line, followed by a line of kids who made him look like a mother duck. He proudly grinned as he and his campers stood in a line facing Jeongin and his team.
Over the megaphone, someone began shouting. "Everyone in line... take a step back. And... 3... 2... 1... Go!"Instantly, everyone bolted toward the centre line where dodgeballs had been lined up. Everyone grabbed a ball and began to move backwards, making it more difficult to target them from a distance.
They all laughed and shouted, throwing dodgeballs in a seemingly aimless manner and laughing as they slid around in the wet grass. Seungmin was the first out, and everyone (on both teams and in the audience) shrieked at the baby being hit in the face with a dodgeball. Jisung held a dodgeball in one hand as he pointed the other at Hyunjin.
"To avenge Seungmin!" He roared as he threw the ball. It slammed into Hyunjin's chest. Jisung turned around to gloat to his team, but was immediately hit in the back of the head with a ball and was out. He sulked over to the other side to wait in jail with Seungmin. As time passed, Jisung got out of jail, Changbin went to jail, and the game continued on for a while until Chan, Felix, and Jeongin were the only people still in the game.
After another 5 minutes, Jeongin had successfully dodged every ball thrown at him, and he'd sent Felix to jail. Once again, it was the cabin leaders against each other.
As Jeongin threw a ball straight at Chan, he slipped, colliding with the ground hard. Chan didn't even notice he had been hit by the ball as he immediately ran to the younger boy. He slid the last few feet, landing on his knees next to Jeongin with worry etched onto his features.
"Oh my god, Jeongin," he gasped, "Are you okay? Did you hit your head? Can you walk?" He continued to bombard the boy with questions until a finger was raised to his lips, signaling him to hush. Jeongin sat up, not removing his hand, and grimaced.
"I didn't hit my head too hard, but my wrist hurts a lot." He looked up at Chan with a pained smile. "But I do believe I won, so are you still on for 'real bets'? Winner chooses something for the loser to do every time." Chan chuckled and agreed to the deal as he grabbed Jeongin's uninjured wrist and pulled the other boy's hand away from his own mouth.
By now, campers from both cabins and several administrators were gathered around the pair who seemed lost in their own little world. They talked for only a moment more before Chan stood up, helping Jeongin to his feet with the hand he hadn't hurt. As the pair marched toward the nurse's station, Chan didn't let go of Jeongin's hand, not even once.
And Jeongin didn't mind at all.
