Reaching out

Soft fur brushes against my face disturbing me from my peaceful rest. With an exasperated sigh I blink open my eyes and look into my spirit animals bright green pools. "What's up kitty?" I ask tiredly while giving her a scratch under the chin.

She mews and head bumps my face in response, luring all the while. "Aww aren't you such a sweetie?" I coo gently while petting her soft grey fur. She meows again, sits back, then begins kneading at the black blanket. Just then a soft knocking sounds from my door and it opens to reveal Sans. He had a bowl and a spoon in his hand, and I could already smell whatever amazing meal Toriel had made.

"I brought you some lunch, I hope I didn't wake you up." He explains as he walks over. He pauses at the side of the bed and places the bowl and spoon down, then smiles nervously at me.

"Nah you're okay, this little rascal got to me first." I respond while gently ruffling the dark fur between her ears. She looks heavily disappointed when I stop to look up at Sans who hadn't said anything else.

He had a strange look in his eyes, but he turns his skull away before I can decipher it. I raise an eyebrow, "Are you alright?"

"Y-Yeah. I'm great." He answers too quickly and I can tell something is bothering him; but it wasn't really my place to pry. Especially after he had saved my life. Twice.

"Oh.. okay." I turn away and look down at my hands while I wrack my blank mind for something to say. I was already an anxious mess around new people as it is, but my nerves were getting out of hand as the silence dragged on. Finally he clears his throat and speaks.

"So how are you feeling?" He begins fiddling with his phalanges as he continues, "I'd imagine probably not very good... your injuries looked pretty bad last night." The guilt was thick in his voice.

"I'm in a bit of pain but I'm still breathing and that's all that matters really." I grin reassuringly at him, though he avoids looking me in the eyes. "You don't have to feel bad about last night. It wasn't your fault I was crazy jumpy. After all I wouldn't have fallen in if I didn't try to push you." I reason, hoping to show him that there are no hard feelings. Finally he turns his skull back to face me, and I can see that his little eye lights had dimmed significantly.

"Thanks but.. I really shouldn't have snuck up on you. Especially after I found you being chased by that guy. Of course you would be scared out of your mind." His voice was small, as if he was afraid being too loud would shatter me. With a deep sigh, I bite back my anger and turn my head away.

I wanted to yell at him and say I didn't need his pity. I wasn't some fragile glass doll that would break with just a look from him. It wasn't his fault though. It wasn't his fault that accidents seemed to find me in every aspect of my life.

He breaks through the mental wall I had absentmindedly begun building between us by reaching out and gently placing a hand on my shoulder.

"I just wanted to remind you that I'm going to be here for you. I might not fully understand what you are going through but I... I-I know what it feels like to not know who you can trust." He removes his hand, and when I look over to see why I catch a small glimpse of a light blue flush covering his cheekbones. Then he is avoiding eye contact again by looking everywhere except at me. Em seems to grow bored with the lack of attention and hops down of the bed, then she exits the room.

I could tell what he had said was a bit personal to him, so without giving myself time to over think, I reach out and take one of his hands in both of mine. Immediately, he turns back to face me, the blush still evident on his face. "Thanks Sans.. that really means a lot."

"Y-Yeah I Uh.. I'm glad. B-but I should let you um eat I guess." He trails off, then chuckles nervously before gently retracting his hand and taking a step back. "You can come join us downstairs when you're finished." He gives me a small wave, then briskly exits the room.

I miss my family.. none of these monsters would understand my minimalistic affection. And I guess that included Sans. It was silly of me to hope otherwise. I mean what person or even what monster for that matter showed gratitude or affection by clasping a strangers hand? He probably thought I was a weirdo now.

Though admittedly I am a weirdo; so if he thought so he wouldn't really be wrong. Deciding not to overthink it, I reach over and grab the warm bowl. The smell immediately made my worries melt away. It smelled like a monster version of a potato soup recipe. My mother's favorite thing to make me whenever I was sick as a kid. Toriel must have mind reading powers because this was exactly what I needed right now.

I devour the soup, smiling all the while, then set the bowl aside so I can get up. With a quick glance around I realize my bag was nowhere in sight. Had I left it on the beach? Or... did Sans grab it.. and perhaps look through it? I hurry out of the room and rush to the steps. Moving as quickly as possible I stumble down the stairs and head towards the kitchen where I could hear several monsters chatting.

When I enter the room Toriel, who had been cleaning the counters while taking to Sans and Alphys, pauses to gaze worriedly at me. "Are you alright?" A warm blush rises to my cheeks as I glance over at Sans who was watching me carefully from the table.

"Oh, y-yeah! I just want to uhm... thank you for the delicious soup..?" It sounds more like a question then anything else, but a smile quickly lights up her face. "It reminds me of home." I finish, hoping to convince the others in the room who seemed less sure of my response.

"Aww I'm so glad! There's plenty of leftovers if you want more." She offers with that lovely  bright smile that lifts my spirits.

"No thanks, I'm stuffed." Toriel nods, then takes my bowl and begins cleaning it. I feel bad that she was doing my dishes when I was fully capable of doing them, but something told me she would refuse the help if I offered. "Thanks again Toriel, you are so kind to welcome me into your home." I continue, trying to avoid Sans and his intense stare for as long as I can.

"It's really no trouble dear." She answers, then begins humming quietly to herself. Now I have no choice but to face him with a strained grin on my face. I stiffly make my way over to the table, noticing as I approach that he had my bag sitting on the table in front of him. I slowly take a seat next to Alphys and clear my throat.

"Hey Alphys, hey Sans."

"H-hi." Alphys responds quickly, then looks relieved as if she felt the sickeningly heavy air too. Sans pushes my bag across the table towards me, which I scoop up and hug to my chest. Relief washes over me when I feel my mask poke me through the bag. Though he very much could have seen it in my bag and left it so I wouldn't know.

"Hey." He responds simply, eye lights flicking down to watch as I brush my fingers through the soft blue puffball keychain attached to my bag. To my dismay it was totally covered in sand. Suddenly Alphys rises from her chair immediately drawing my attention away from Sans.

"W-well w-would you look at t-the t-time. Toriel? S-shouldn't we h-head out for that c-class?" Her soft voice breaks through the thick cloud of silence.

"Oh! Yes! Hurry now or we will be late." Toriel snatches a hand towel and begins patting her fur covered hands dry, rushing towards the front door all the while. Alphys snatches a set of keys and a pair of glasses off the counter and rushes after her. The door slams shut, leaving Sans and I alone in the silent house.
