Sometimes you are your own greatest enemy

The cool night air swirls around me, gently lifting my hair while bringing the salty ocean air to my attention. My bare feet sink in the soft cold sand as I walk barefoot down the beach; no real destination in mind. Just forward. Something deep inside me tells me to not look back, just keep moving.

It was a clear night, there was not even a single cloud in the sky. The moon graces the beach with it's cool soothing light, covering everything in a beautiful layer of blue tinted silver light. I lift my head and gaze longingly into the dark star speckled star.

On nights like this, my loneliness is an inescapable fact of my life. I didn't have many friends in my court these days, and my family was away for work. As the sadness sinks it's claws deeper into my soul I lower my head and sigh.  Somehow, despite standing still while gazing at the stars, I was now standing before a dock that wasn't here before.

I felt drawn to the water so without thinking much of it I begin making my way down the wooden dock. As I walk, my loneliness slowly begins dissipating with each step closer to the edge. Good riddance.

When I near the edge of the dock I pause and look down into the dark water. Waves gently caress the metal bases holding the dock up, adding to the wonderfully calm vibe. I prepare to sit down and enjoy this peaceful setting I stumbled upon when the air suddenly turns heavy. The smell of cigarette smoke burns my nose making me involuntarily shudder as a deep fear claws it's way into my very soul.

Without looking, I knew he had found me. "Hey." There was no where to run. He was so close I could feel his breath tickling my ear, and again I find myself shaking. "Why do you bother trying to run from me?" He leans back, allowing me to cautiously turn around and face him head on.

A gasp escapes my lips when my gaze lands on him. Of course he had a body shape, but he was a shadowy blur. It was impossible to make out any distinguishing features, except of course the lit cigarette hanging from what I would assume is his mouth. "W-why are you following me?" I try to sound strong but my wavering voice gives my fear away.

He chuckles, takes a long drag on his cigarette, then tosses it aside and blows the thick sickening smoke into my face. I step as far back as I can until my heels are hanging an inch off the dock. "Isn't it obvious kitten?" His voice becomes harsh and full of hate at the nickname, then he steps closer; again leaving no room for me to run or fight him. "I'm ready to get rid of you." He growls then shoves me over the edge.

I fall back in slow motion as I desperately reach out in a futile attempt to grab him; but he fades into nothingness and my hands slice through empty air. A squeak escapes my lips just before I hit the water, which knocks what little air I had left in my lungs from my body.

I thrash about, fighting the suddenly rough waves, in hopes of breaching the surface. As my lungs start burning, yearning for even the tiniest gasp of air. The waves have thrown me around so much that I no longer know which way is up and which is down. Finally I somehow surface for only a second before another wave crashes into me and shoves me harshly against the metal poles supporting the dock.

"Fuck!" I gasp as my body hits the carpeted floor with a loud thud. I suck in several frantic and disoriented breaths before my body begins to relax. It was just a dream, I wasn't actually drowning. I am safe. Am I though? He was coming for me, and it was only a matter of time before he found out where I was hiding.
